Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1817070

System Information

I confirm:

  • [X ] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [ X] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

After starting the game, a first window appears, telling me, I've no GPU installed.
Clicking on OK starts the launcher, which works well. Tried different graphical presets (low, medium).
After this, another window tells me, I've not the latest version of graphics driver.
Clicking on OK, a black screen appears, and after some seconds, the game crashes.
Sometimes the crash reporter appears, sometimes it doesn't.

Game works well on my Steam Deck. :)

Reproduction

Always.

Do you have any launch options enabled?

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

I can play just fine, and even enable RT. something feels off about the performance however, regardless if im on low, or ultra, the game caps out at around 30-40fps. There's no reason it should run the same at Low and Ultra.

VVysp3r 2022-08-12 github

@Bitwolfies How did you enable RT? And for the performance side of things it's the same for me, even if I change the graphics, the performance does not seems to change at all. Even DLSS isn't doing much.

I added VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 %command% to the launch options.

I have the same symptoms but it does load after the third dialog. 7.0.3 works but Experimental gives me the crash message.

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

I was able to get it running with proton experimental but performance is awful. I'm running a 5800x3D, RTX 3080, and 32 gig of ram and the game dips to 25fps when swinging through the city. I can confirm the graphics settings pretty much do nothing for me too. Idk why this runs so poorly, it's steam deck verified so shouldn't it run fine on PC?

VVysp3r 2022-08-12 github

I'm starting to think it may be an NVIDIA card issue. Everyone with AMD card seems to run the games fine from what I saw.

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

Yes I suppose that it could be an Nvidia issue. The deck is AMD.

VVysp3r 2022-08-12 github

I will try on my Steam Deck, I'm installing it right now.

Yeah, for the most part it seems to be the swinging, on top of buildings is pretty smooth all things considered, but swinging tanks it, along with the loading times being a bit worse than on Windows seemingly. Im at least happy its not just me who felt like changing settings was pointless.

Im not sure if we really benefit from the game ready drivers like Windows does, but NV has not released a driver on Linux since the one that added the spider man optimizations, which from what ive heard seem critical to making it run alright.

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

Yah the swinging definitely tanks it, but also the initial fight scene
caused my fps to hover in the 40s. I should be getting way better
performance considering my system. Even their upscaling setting didn’t help.

The upscaling doesn't seems to do anything for me performance wise.

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

The game for sure is VERY CPU bound, but I only see a difference of 5-10% usage when swinging compared to standing on a roof. I truly think its an NV issue, but if its just a driver update we dont have yet, or a VKD3D issue, im unsure of.

VVysp3r 2022-08-12 github

Yeah that's my thread ahah @Bitwolfies

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

It may be CPU bound, but surely I should get higher than 30fps with a 5800x3D.

VVysp3r 2022-08-12 github

I got a somewhat stable 40fps on the Steam Deck tho on very low settings

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

HQ textures have a really hard time loading, also, this.

Game also by default uses Steam Deck icons for xbox controllers. when not using steam input, if you use steam input, you get the right icons, but rumble does not work due to another bug I reported. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8590#issuecomment-1192813338

Along with this, the adaptive triggers dont work in steam input mode, despite this update, either its a bug or the devs have to implement it per game. https://i.redd.it/y552c86t4pe91.png

Aside from the Nvidia GPU which I haven't experienced the game with just yet, the game seems to require a SSD (at least SATA3 and not too slow). I initially installed the game on a HDD and faced terrible framedrops while navigating around the city. I moved it to a Samsung 850 EVO SSD and it's been pretty much a locked 72fps @ 144Hz (half vsync) at 1440p high/ultra mix on a RX 5700XT and a 5800X (the game is bound to half the cores of my 5950X). If you're already running the game from a SSD then there might be some specific issue on Nvidia.

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

Yeah I think it's an Nvidia issue because I'm already running it on a 1TB Samsung 870 evo.

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

Can attest I also have an NVME HP drive, so its not that.

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

Might be related, but the game only uses around 40% of my 3080 according to mangohud. Very low settings use about 30, everything else, even max, only uses 40%, I think this might be the issue. Is there a way to overrride this?

BBrennan-King 2022-08-12 github

I tried proton-ge and there was about a 20fps improvement for me.

BBitwolfies 2022-08-12 github

Sadly GE yielded no uplift for me.

BB-Waffles 2022-08-13 github

Can confirm, happens the same on my system with a GTX 1650 laptop.
Game either straight up crashes or runs at extremely low fps, am getting the same 'no gpu installed' error on startup.
Probably an Nvidia issue as AMD cards seem to run it fine.

Mmmcnutt 2022-08-13 · hidden on GitHub github

Its not strictly an nvidia issue - I'm having issues loading it on a 5700XT

However I am using steam flatpak, which might have something to do with it

edit: got it working, the game needs mesa git and proton experimental - using mesa git in flatpak details here

I just thought I would share some information about my experience with the Spiderman game.

I can personally get the game to run with Proton Experiemental (no launch commands). And the game works fine if I use the launch commands required for DLSS and Ray tracing (I say works fine, there's some performance issues and a minor graphical glitch).

Here are my launch commands for DLSS and Ray Tracing: PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 %command%

Some notes about my setup and my experience:

Specs:
CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X
GPU: RTX 3060 with driver 515.65.01 (downloaded directly from Nvidia's website)
Kernel version: 5.18.0-4-amd64
Distrobution: Debian Testing
Controller: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (connected to my PC via a USB cable)

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The game will crash exactly as reported by others users, unless my controller is unplugged when I open the game and during the first few seconds of the intro video. After the first few seconds of the intro video, I can plug the controller in and it works just fine.

Ssysms 2022-08-13 github

@Treemcgee324 I can confirm, that having my controller (Xbox 360 Wireless) connected, before the game reaches at least the main menu, seems to be the culprit.

The game starts reliable, if I don't have the controller connected!

When connecting the controller in the main menu, it still sometimes crashes, as soon as the controllers connection is established.
Connecting the controller while already in-game hasn't crashed the game (yet).

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (1817070): Random Crashes During Normal Gameplay

Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6090.
@Javillin posted on 2022-08-14T00:03:24:

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1817070

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game will crash at random during normal game play. Sometimes I can get away with a couple hours of consistent game play and other times it crashes within a few minutes, but the same issue will happen every time.

The game will freeze while audio continues playing. I will have to alt+tab out of the game to force close it with steam. I have not done anything other than play the game to get the crashes and it doesn't matter if I play the story missions or side missions or just collect things around the world.

It seems to happen at random in the open world and sometimes when I transition from open world to inside a building for a mission. Everything else runs smooth and I have no issues other than random crashes at different times during game play.

Changing the graphics settings does not help and sometimes will cause the game to crash if graphic settings are changed during game play.

Reproduction

Will crash all the time during gameplay.

No audio in game when using my 32 channel audio interface.

Edit: Got audio working with "protontricks 1817070 sound=alsa"

I tried GE-Proton7-29, GE-Proton7-27, Proton Experimental, winecfg to configure audio, and various launch options that have helped in the past for other games and various sample rate settings (44.1k and 48k).

With my audio interface I need to have it set to 32 channels or else the audio can be very distorted, the wrong speed, etc, but as a test I did put it into a two channel mode and was able to hear garbled audio and the logs no longer contained the thousands of pulse errors I had noticed before.

1859 1259.981:0130:0264:err:pulse:pulse_spec_from_waveformat Invalid channel mask: 8/32 and 63f(63f)
1860 1259.981:0130:0264:err:pulse:pulse_spec_from_waveformat Invalid format! Channel spec valid: 0, format: 5

Running it on non deck, I only had a graphic glitch, on the bag in the lab at the start.

BBrennan-King 2022-08-15 github

I'm dual booting with windows 11 so I tried running it on that. I got a massive performance uplift on my system (5800X3D, 32GB RAM, RTX3080). I went from hitting ~25fps when swinging through the city to a rock solid 100fps (my monitor refresh rate). I've only seen very rare drops to the 80s in particularly intense scenes. Definitely seems like proton performance is rough and I'll be sticking to windows until this is updated.

Whenever I enable DLSS ingame, all graphics (except menus) are black.
Game runs at 120FPS in Ultra otherwise with FSR or IGTI. Same thing with GE-Proton7-29.

Has anyone noticed that their game suddenly crashes/freezes a lot more often recently? I bought the game on launch and I had barely any issues.

I have a Ryzen 7 2700X + GTX 1080 Ti running both Arch and Gentoo Linux. Before today, I've run Spider-Man on Proton Experimental and GE Proton and it was running fine on both distros and Proton versions. Then, suddenly my game crashes like every 5 minutes.

I've tested it on my Gentoo and Arch. I uninstalled and reinstalled to different hard drives. I switched back and forth between Fullscreen, Exclusive, and Windowed, and changed multiple settings. I tampered with the launch options as some comments suggested. No fix for me. Still crashes.

I'm seeing comments that suggest it's an Nvidia driver issue, which that may be the case, but it's strange since I was running the game pretty well before today.

I usually do all the side content I can do before advancing to the main story. I'm in the part where you just got access to Harry's Research Labs to earn Research Tokens. And it's like suddenly after that, my game freezes every so often.

Anyone who is also getting this issue with a similar setup?

My only solution is to either wait for a new Nvidia GPU driver or to play Spider-Man on Windows :(

Yep, I get consistent crashes at the research stations also and I have a 1080ti running on Manjaro. No settings I tried as far as I can tell changes the crashing. I'm leaning toward it being a Nvidia driver issue as well.

DDishoungh 2022-08-17 github

Replying to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6088#issuecomment-1217334996

Okay. That makes sense. I figured I wasn't the only one having these problems. It's strange how it was running perfectly fine before I progressed to the stations. Anyway, it sounds like either we're going to have to wait for a new driver update or simply play Spider-Man on Windows.

Jjohnny2k 2022-08-17 github

Has anyone noticed that their game suddenly crashes/freezes a lot more often recently?

Mine has always frozen after some amount of time. I don't think it's every crashed out. It just gets stuck on a frame and the audio continues to play. I can kill -15 and restart and then have it play just fine in the same part.

I've been trying various tweaks, graphics settings but nothing seems to make it more or less reliable.

Nvidia 970 for me.

Nnitanmarcel 2022-08-17 github

Tried the game both in Linux and Windows. On Linux the game was unplayable, the warnings describe here don't happen on Windows. I noticed a great performance hit between these 2 OSs. On Linux I barley hit 30 fps with high settings + fsr, on Windows I get 30+ fps with the same settings.

Nnitanmarcel 2022-08-17 github

The crashes however are totally related to proton, tried with lutris' version of wine and the game booted correctly and had no random crashes

no way to get it working with steam/proton, standard wine in the distribution or lutris, all last version.
With wine-devel (7.16) it runs.

I'm consistently getting freezes (not out of memory) since the last experimental update 5 days ago. Wine log is full of this message:

0204:warn:d3d12_command_list_IASetIndexBuffer: Invalid index format 0. This will map to R16_UINT to match observed driver behavior.

This is probably nvidia related (GTX 1650, 515.76, Fedora), downgrading the driver didn't help at all so the problem's on proton side.

Edit: The freezes only happen when swinging or zipping, both things that turn on motion blur. Normal movement and perch takedowns don't trigger it. Looks like dxvk has problems with that specific shader.

@pooroligarch @Mikaka27 There was a recent change made in experimental that enabled dxvknvapi for a number of games including this one. It is relatively easy to see if this change is what broke the game for you - you can edit the proton script (located by default at ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton - Experimental/proton) and comment out line 1106 (which is "1817070", #marvel's spider-man remastered) by adding a # at the very beginning of the line.

For context - the change was here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/pull/6120

Edit: I missed @Mikaka27 's last comment saying that reverting the driver fixed the issue. In this case, the problem should be reported to the NVIDIA driver team. Proving that dxvknvapi was not also at fault is still interesting though - if you have time to test commenting out the line, I would be interested in the results :)

If it's not an rtx card turning on ray tracing would give you single digit frame rates, it's not worth it. It's also not on topic unfortunately so I hope you find the help you need!

My gamepad (wired xbox one controller) stopped working in the game since the last update of proton experimental. Before, I was using the "7.0" experimental version and it worked great. Since the update to the "8.0" branch, it stopped working only for this game. I've tried Horizon Zero Dawn that I also play with the experimental branch and the gamepad is still working.
I've tried other games, not necessarily with proton experimental, and my gamepad works great.
I've also tried with the new proton 8.0 and still no gamepad. If I try with proton 7.0.6, the game crashes at launch.
If someone can confirm that or explain to me what I can do, it would be nice.
Thanks

If you're using dynamic resolution scaling, try disabling it (the framerate target setting, set that to off). This game crashes outright for me if dynamic res is on but works fine with it off.

I've already tried setting everything to off/lowest, tried changing scaling/no scaling or to higher settings with more things on, mostly the same results, only difference is the amount of time it takes for it to freeze, lighting still glitches.

Thanks, I think that hints to us that there's something not quite sane with the NVIDIA userspace libraries that supports DLSS on your system.

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (1817070): DualSense speaker and haptic feedback don't work

Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/7546.
@rightaditya posted on 2024-03-03T04:15:15:

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1817070

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The work described in #5900 enabled advanced DualSense functionality (namely, the speaker and the haptic feedback) for many games, but it seems that Nixxes/Insomniac are using a different method to detect/use this functionality in Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. While the adaptive triggers work properly, there is no sound coming from the controller's speaker, despite this option being enabled in the game (the same is true for audio through the controller's headphone jack, and the setting of controller vs. headphone vs. auto in the game doesn't affect any of this). Similarly, even though the haptic feedback setting is enabled, the game only uses plain rumble.

steam-1817070.log

Reproduction

  1. With a DualSense connected via a wired connection, open Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and verify that the relevant settings are set properly (enable controller speaker and haptic feedback).
  2. Load or start a new game.
  3. There is no sound output from the controller when there should be and the vibration used is the regular rumble rather than haptic feedback. For example, web swinging should trigger both of these, but doesn't.

On the same machine, the controller speaker and haptic feedback work as expected when running the game on Windows. This issue has been tested over multiple distributions, including Nobara, CachyOS, PikaOS, and ChimeraOS (and possibly others, but I've lost track at this point). I haven't found a Proton version that doesn't exhibit this issue, having tried all of the 8.0 releases, experimental, the last few GE-Proton releases, and the old fork with the relevant patches applied from before they were upstreamed.

Enabling/disabling Steam Input makes no difference, though I'll note that the adaptive triggers don't quite respond the same way with Steam Input enabled as they do with it disabled (in which case they respond as they do on Windows).

It's worth noting that the patches from #5900 used the audio device name "Wireless Controller", I believe matching what was done for the DS4 controller. However, on Windows, the audio device name for the DualSense speaker is actually "DualSense Wireless Controller". I thought that perhaps other games used a substring check while Spider-Man used an exact string comparison, and @rafaelrgazquez went and made a fork to test this theory. The fork uses the proper name, but the game still doesn't use the controller speaker or haptic feedback. From this we conclude that the game is using some other method to use the controller speaker and haptic feedback(possibly in conjunction with device name tests).

In all cases, the audio device does show up as a quadrophonic audio device in winecfg with the device name changed accordingly. Testing it there works as expected. No other games with support for the advanced DualSense features seem to exhibit this issue. Spider-Man: Miles Morales might, but I don't have it to test myself.

I'm happy to help investigate, though at this stage I'd need some direction. The only thing I could think of trying next was to disassemble the binaries and go hunting for whatever logic controls whether the speaker controller and haptic feedback are detected/used, but I have no clue how to do that (and suspect it would be non-trivial even if I did).

@ClearlyClaire Sorry to ping you here, but any chance I could ask for some pointers on how you went about figuring out what games were doing to test for the advanced DualSense features? I'm willing to do the leg work on figuring this out for this game, but I'm sadly stuck and not sure what to try next (other than disassembling game binaries, which I suspect would be very difficult to get useful information from, and also, I don't really know how to do it..).

Sorry, I missed that message. Basically, I increased wine's log levels on particular subsystems and tried to figure out how the API calls were used by reading the logs and a lot of documentation.

PROTON_DUMP_DEBUG_COMMANDS=1 PROTON_LOG=1 WINEDEBUG=+timestamps,+xaudio2,+mmdevapi,+setupapi,+hid,+pulse

This can be really noisy, since obviously each of these subsystems are used for more than just the Dualsense audio. hid is probably way too noisy to be useful here, but iirc I had confirmed some stuff from those logs. Also, there may be other relevant subsystems I am not aware of.

DualSense haptics still don't work in Spider-Man Remastered even though the latest Proton Experimental changelog says otherwise:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Changelog#available-in-proton-experimental-as-of-2025-10-24

Available in Proton Experimental (as of 2025-10-24):
Fixed haptics support for DualSense controllers which should now work in most games that support it.

@nokia8801 Thank you for the report - this is exactly why we said "most games" ... we actually did know about this one already and we are separately working on it, but if you find any other games where the DualSense haptics support is still failing, please report on the issue and feel free to tag me :)

Hey there. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. I just really love these Spider-Man games and have used haptics on PS5 for years. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that most users are confusing haptics with normal rumble/classic vibrations and think haptics are working when it actually isn't. Haptics are little audio based thumps all over the controller, like very tiny vibrations.

This unfortunately doesn't work with Spider-Man Remastered at the moment.

Also, there is no mention of this anywhere but are we supposed to be using tools like Helvum? Or is it supposed to be plug-and-play? Because I've even tried that but it still doesn't work. Spider-Man Remastered launched three stereo audio instances and DualSense has two instances, one for the input microphone which isn't related, and one for the speaker/haptics with 4 channels.

But I've tried connecting all three Spider-Man instances to the controller through Helvum yet there was still no haptic feedback.

Also, I've forgot to mention this but the controller speaker in this game doesn't work either. I don't know if that's related to haptics or not. Web zips and other specific sounds should be coming from the controller speaker (when the feature is turned on) but it doesn't work either.

No confusion for me I understand the difference . Last time I played both haptics (ie haptic triggers)
and rumble worked for me duel since 5. Nvidia 3060 kde neon 6. x11 plasma desktop.

You're already calling Adaptive Triggers as haptic triggers so I find it hard to believe you aren't confused.

Adaptive Triggers are just that, adaptive triggers, has nothing to do with haptics we are discussing. It's just resistance when you push R2 and L2. Adaptive Triggers work without any issues.

And haptics aren't the same as vibration/rumble that most people are familiar with. Rumble/Vibration still works. Haptics don't. Which is why I said:

Haptics are little audio based thumps all over the controller, like very tiny vibrations.

Unless most people played on a PS5 or on Windows and experienced this themselves, I have a strong feeling they are mistaking normal rumble/classic vibration with haptic feedback.

At least in Spider-Man Remastered's case. Haptic feedback doesn't work right now. I hope it does in the future.

You argument of sematics wont change anything. I understood perfectly and it works fine.
Your talking to someone to reapairs these controllers. I know the location of every servo, and gear and what it does. Every function works as intended the controller is 100% utilized PS5 duel shock 5.

I'm just talking about this specific game. Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (and also Miles Morales Remastered). Haptic feedback doesn't work in these two games. It might work in others, I can't comment on them. That's why I'm on this specific issue report for this specific game, as it doesn't work here.

Yeah sorry but now I know for a fact you're confusing normal rumble with haptic feedback. Literally everyone, Valve dev, that list and many more people say it's not working (with or without Helvum) but somehow it's working for you. Ok mate.

Yep. Experiencing this myself. Thought it was just me.

RT on or off, lowest or highest settings, it doesn't matter. Every few 100 meters Spider-Man swings the game either pauses or mud textures are loaded instead. It looks disgusting even with the highest settings and RT on. Most visible when standing stationary and looking at stuff not even that far away. They're all low textures.

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1817070

System Information

  • GPU: RX 9070 XT
  • Video driver version: Mesa 25.3.3
  • Kernel version: 6.17.7-ba25.fc43.x86_64
  • Link to full system information report as Gist:
  • Proton version: 10.0-3

I confirm:

  • [X ] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

If RT reflections are enabled, the game immediately crashes with an error that the game is attempting to use more video memory than your system can support. This occurs regardless of the input and output resolution, and testing on Windows reveals actual VRAM usage is maxing out at 11-12 GiB at identical settings at 4K, which shouldn't be an issue as the 9070 XT has 16 GiB VRAM. Lowering the output resolution to 1440p doesn't resolve the issue.

I tested in Steam Game Mode (bazzite-deck) and from my KDE desktop, and included logs for both. I see the same behavior in both cases. I also validated files in Steam, but no errors were found.

Another user reported the same error on Nvidia hardware using the proprietary Nvidia driver on Proton-GE 10-26, and in that case, the error appeared to be caused by a zero-sized pipeline object passed to vkd3d-Proton. See https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/2763

Reproduction

  1. Enable RT reflections. The game will immediately crash with the above error.
  2. To establish this is the cause, edit home/USERNAME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1817070/pfx/user.reg and change "RTReflections"=dword:00000001" to "RTReflections"=dword:00000000"
  3. Restart game and the game will run without crashing.

EDIT:

It turns out that I can prevent the crashes by using SteamDeck=0. When doing so, RT works normally without the crash/error message and VRAM usage is well below 16 GiB. SteamDeck=1 is set automatically by the Bazzite-deck image (boots directly into Steam Gaming Mode), and apparently it still applies when booting the game from the KDE desktop. Unlike other games, all the graphical options are available, but internally, it must be setting a low VRAM cap based on the limitations of the Steam Deck hardware.
