Symptoms

Game starts but hangs on black screen before even getting to the opening logos

I have found that with my specific setup (6800XT, other AMD GPUs might be affected as well), the "Environment Detail" setting causes an amdgpu driver reset (when it turns night and a horde appears).
If you encounter this, disabling Environment Detail will "fix" the problem.

This is probably not a Proton issue (nothing Proton does should really cause a driver crash & reset, I think), so I created an issue for this on the amdgpu driver tracker, including more details and a save game to reproduce this:
