Symptoms

Game crashes at at a specific spot early in the game with recent Proton versions. Game works with older Proton version Proton-7.0-6

I tested the game with:
proton-7.0-6-rc5 - Success
proton-8.0-2d - Fail
experimental-bleeding-edge-8.0 - Fail
GE-Proton8-3-11 - Fail

Reproduction

  1. Play through the prologue (examine all items in apartment and exit)
  2. Enter the office building, do all work tasks on the first floor, then enter the elevator and press the button to floor 2
  3. The game will crash when the elevator reaches floor 2

I have the same issue with this game it seems to be related to libavpro (and it being recently enabled by default in proton), removing /Night Security_Data/Plugins/x86_64/AVProVideo.dll makes it playable, but the videos are really important for the story. So I wouldn't recommend playing it this way.

I added my proton log export.

I can confirm the same behavior with the steam deck (preview build).

steam-2367230.log

It's important to note that the video playback does not work even on on proton 7.0.6, there however the game does not load the video.

@insan1k I can confirm that the videos were skipped with the older proton version.

However good news! The game seems to be working now out of the box using Proton experimental bleeding edge branch. No crash getting to level 2 and the video playing on the TV on floor 2 is working too :tada:

Including log of entering floor 2 without crash and successfully watching the video on the TV:

I'm going to play through the rest of the game now and see if there are any other problems
