Sometimes hangs when loading from checkpoint - causes the whole machine to lock up (I can't Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example)

The only "peculiarity" I have is that I'm using bcache on the block device with my steam library.

Happy to provide further details.

Hello @HughPH, please copy your system information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

May be because I didn't have LLVM7 and Mesa 18.1(+)

Will update shortly

Separate gripe: Not clear from the Steam Play page that there's so much more to do, and the PreReqs page doesn't give any suggestion on where to find Mesa 18.1 or above.

Loaded from checkpoint 10 times without any hangs, probably LLVM/Mesa issue.

KKira-PH 2018-08-27 github

After removing Mesa 18.2 (because I learnt I didn't - apparently - need it if I was using NVidia) this issue has come back. Even after reinstalling Mesa from the recommended PPA and installing LLVM 8, the issue persists.

Hello @HughPH, can you check if you have /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/intel_icd.x86_64.json and temporarily move it somewhere out of the way?

KKira-PH 2018-08-27 github

Thanks Kisak, I do have that and I have temporarily moved it out of the way. What do you expect the effect to be? I've been running DOOM with OpenGL.

I'm not sure if the problem went away in the first place, since this evening I have...

  1. Experienced a hang when loading the next level, (it happens on the screen with the small rotating empty circle in the top right before the Loading screen appears and the Loading percentage)
  2. Loaded the next level, played a Rune Challenge, Loaded from Checkpoint a couple of times, moved to the next level again, played another Rune Challenge and Loaded from Checkpoint a few more times - totalling more than 10 occasions that I've seen that screen, I reckon. (With Steam in Offline mode - which surely must be coincidental, not causal!)

It would be fair to say that it's intermittent, so I'll reply if I get the hang again, or if I've had a good run of it not occurring.

KKira-PH 2018-08-27 github

@kisak-valve moved the file temporarily, I'm afraid it didn't help. (Actually renamed to intel_icd.x86_64.json.outoftheway)

Still seeing the same issue. Sometimes the mouse cursor shows. (I get similar lockups in Rage but I can usually switch out of the GUI, kill it and switch back.)

I got a (very big) log by setting user_settings.py to log at info level - although it's logging at trace?? I don't think it shows much of interest, except for some long sections about unwinding an exception. First 26 lines of such a section here

Came looking to see if anyone else has reported this issue already. I have experenced the same thing with DOOM (2016).

@willpiam any better for you on the newest update? 3.7-5 beta (actually in my compatdata/379720/version file it says 3.7-2)

KKira-PH 2018-09-09 github

This is still an issue on 3.7-6

KKira-PH 2018-12-12 github

This is still an issue after I created a clean install of Kubuntu 18.10. There is nothing "special" about this install at this point.

Kubuntu 18.10 with default Kernel, nvidia-driver-415, Steam, DOOM.

This issue persists after changing my CPU from i7-4810MQ to i7-4940MX and GPU from GTX 970M to GTX 1070.

Not sure. Haven’t had a chance to play in a few weeks.
