Symptoms

The game does not show the cutscene videos when played through Proton. I would consider this game breaking since you will miss out on vital information for the story.

Reproduction

If you start the game on Windows you will see an intro video. When I started the game on my Steam Deck, it went straight to the game and skipped over this. It will skip all videos, but the one in the start is the easiest one to test.

Tested on my Steam Deck:

  • Videos work, but audio is broken on current Proton 9.0.

  • It sounds fine on Proton 6.3.

  • The Launcher does not support gamepad controls, you need to use the touchscreen.

    • If you go to Video Options you can not go back, because the title bar with the X is not drawn in game mode, works fine in Desktop mode.

Notice the loop?

Proton 6.3 audio sample:

No loop (I had the volume a bit lower, sorry for that).

Reproduction steps:

  1. Start the game.
  2. In the launcher, click on Launch Nine Hours, Nine (use the touchscreen if on Steam Deck).
  3. Watch the intro video when starting a new game.
  4. Once the video has finished and you see a text box you will hear the looping audio like the example I uploaded.

Hello @notpentadactyl, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, reproduce the regression, and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, there's years of changes between Proton 6.3 and 9.0. Please test the game with some intermediate Proton versions and see if you can reduce the timeframe of the regression.

Hi!

All tests done on my PC, and I waited until I hid the audio looping and then closed the game window with the X button in the title bar:

Proton 9.0-4: steam-477740.log

  • Video is playing. ✅
  • Audio is broken. ❌

Proton 8.0-5: steam-477740.log

  • No video is playing. ❌
  • Audio is good. ✅

Proton 7.0-6: steam-477740.log

  • No video is playing. ❌
  • Audio is good. ✅

Proton 6.3-8: steam-477740.log

  • Video is playing. ✅
  • Audio is good. ✅

@notpentadactyl Thank you for the detailed testing report! We are investigating this regression :)

If it's any help for those testing or for those playing, it's interesting to note that skipping any cutscene, even the short 3-4 second ones with a door opening, will avoid looping the last half-second as it typically does.

@alasky17 I saw the line "Fixed / improved video playback in: [...] Zero Escape: The Nonary Games" here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/releases/tag/proton-10.0-1b and have tested it on Steam Deck. It seems to be fixed, thanks!
