Symptoms

Games crashes on launch, black screen stays, only way to close is via terminal

Reproduction

Click run game, game launches, steam overlay icon appears, game crashes to black screen with wine error "A fatal error encountered\ posted at

Aasim-vax 2018-10-21 github

Game crash was due to multi monitors - opened install folder in terminal, ran launcher using wine, changed from borderless to windowed and set it to specified resolution - should be good to whitelist :)

Edit: the fatal crash happened again, the only difference was a steam controller wasn't plugged in - seems that any controller plugged in(tried with ps4 and steam controller) gets me past the fatal error, but only mouse and keyboard crashes

The game doesn't start whatsoever with the default settings of Proton 3.16-5 Beta. My GPU is the integrated Intel graphics. HW+OS info: https://gist.github.com/adrianlshaw/fcda49f136f82ffa21d20809c6b6e0bb

It is possible to force it to run using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as a launch option. This gets it to the title screen. However, the game is generally unplayable once a save is loaded.

I tried on another machine with default Ubuntu 18.04 with + thethe latest NVIDIA graphics and it worked out of the box without any configs.

Perhaps there's an issue with Intel GPU drivers or the desktop environment I was using.

Kkisak-valve maintainer 2018-12-15 github

Hello @adrianlshaw, vulkan support for Intel/Haswell is experimental and incomplete. It's not surprising that you have trouble with dxvk on that system, Aside from that, mesa 13.0 is too old to be supported by Proton and may have other issues.

First up:

https://gist.github.com/nstgc/f6a5308fbbdf2adc8a6cd9da66bc11cc

https://gist.github.com/nstgc/608b976408f7851578269587554793d3

The first is system info and the second is journalctl stuff.

When I launched FF12 for the first time, after it went through all the basic install stuff, it just kind of locked up, the window went white, and then I lost control. The cursor disappeared, and I couldn't change to a different TTY (ctrl+alt+F#). I ended up trying Magic SysReq. I Tried "R" to wrest control from X. I waited a minute or so but nothing happened so I tried "I" to send terminate signals. Again I waited, and then tried "E" to kill everything. That worked and I was able to log and restart my computer.

Needless to say I don't have a Proton log, and I don't feel like trying to make one given how badly that went. Not until I hear from someone at least.

Symptoms

Game crashes at startup with Proton version 5.0-8. Run perfectly with 4.11-13 or previous 5.0-x version.

Reproduction

Run the game with Proton version 5.0-8

Jjrr45 2020-06-23 github

Proton 5.0-9 seems to have fixed the issue in 5.0-8. I was experiencing the same crash as @bg2908 but it runs great now.

The crash problem on the experimental branch may be fixed with today's release.

With 6.3-6 or Proton Experimental the ingame sound is extremely loud and distorted. With the newest Proton GE 6.18 or 6.16 I get no sound at all (unless I switch to HDMI Audio then it is distorted again). Has anybody experienced this issue? I never had this with any Game. I tried messing with the audio in winecfg and deleting and rebuilding the prefix a couple of times and nothing changed.

OS: Manjaro Cinnamon
Kernel: 5.14.7-2

The game runs on Arch Linux, and I have completed the game on there.
The problem is that it doesn't detect my 3440x1440 ultrawide resolution, while the game itself have arbitrary resolution support:

Tested with Proton Experimental and up to date Arch Linux, RX 6700 XT

@minecraft2048 If the game wants to launch with wined3d can you test if anything then changes?

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

@Blisto91
Well its much buggier than DXVK:
20220624065810_1
and its still locked to 2560x1440 max

Changing display setting to borderless fullscreen with DXVK works though

WWedge009 2026-06-27 github

I started playing just over a week ago, vanilla Proton 10.0-4 on Ubuntu 24.04.4. Has been working just as I remember on the PS4, no glitches whatsoever... until today.

In the Nabreus Deadlands, the transition between The Slumbermead and Echoes of the Past regions, in both directions, the auto-save icon in the top-left shows, then turns into a loading animation before the game crashes with the 'Fatal error occurred' message. Fortunately, no data is lost, when I restart the auto-save file is present where the crash happened.

Not sure why this particular transition, whether it's specific to my current game, or whether it also occurs in native Windows. Avoiding this transition is a feasible work-around, I haven't encountered any similar issues yet.

Ssimifor 2026-06-27 github

@Wedge009 it would be useful to have a savefile for local reproduction, and a video showing how to hit the issue would be appreciated as well

WWedge009 2026-06-28 github

I was just reporting the issue to see if anyone else has encountered this. But I checked two other saved games from different sources and I run into the same issue at the same transition point.

Image

I haven't yet confirmed if this also occurs on Windows... but after a quick search it appears that it's not specific to Proton: https://steamcommunity.com/app/595520/discussions/0/1696046342871134656/

If you would still like to investigate, I can provide a saved game, but this appears to be reproducible to anyone who can access the Nabreus Deadlands.
