Symptoms

Every single second the game will stutter and freeze for about an eighth of a second before recovering, making smooth gameplay borderline impossible. Also server pings are reported as 999+ms, causing disconnects when starting games.

Reproduction

Just launch the game. It is observable immediately after the splash screen ends and the main menu begins.

AAll-The-Foxes 2023-10-05 github

Some additional things I've noticed. When the game starts, you're able to move around and control a character that can knock over the letters of the company logo, pick them up and throw them, attack, etc. Basically it immediately loads into the game and the splash screen becomes a little playable demo. During this time, I can move around and do everything as normal. A little progress indicator in the bottom left corner says that I'm connecting to the servers or authenticating or something, and as soon as that finishes there's a few more seconds of demo playability where the glitchiness you see in the video I uploaded begins before the game progresses to the main menu and the little demo ends.

Checking server options in settings shows that every server, NA, Asia, Europe, etc, has a 999+ ping, but the servers behave normally when I actually start a match. There's no network lag. There's just that consistent stutter that makes it difficult to play the game.

Using the launch options VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=1 LFX=1 %command% enables DLSS but NRLL, NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency, remains greyed out.

The game is currently #7 on Steam's best seller list and has been in the top 10 for a few months now. Getting this working for the masses on Steam Decks and such while it's still such a popular title with a rapidly growing player base would be a great investment. I've asked around and have been told by most people that they can't even launch it. I never asked for specifics from any of them, like system configs/specs and such, but playability seems to be a mixed bag for some reason.

Here's another log file. I played through a full game for this one and didn't just flip around on the main menu.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10 with the 6.5.0-9-generic kernel, Nvidia Reflex Low Latency is no longer greyed out but the consistent stuttering remains identical using GE-Proton8-20.

Today's update is unusable on various Proton versions, can someone confirm this? I can't join a custom game (Connection Error), sometimes my friends can see me in the lobby but I don't actually join; when I try to host the interface just goes missing randomly. It's all over the place and different with every restart.

AAll-The-Foxes 2024-04-28 github

After the latest update, I can no longer start any matches at all. Quick Match games exit back to the main menu with error 50001 (failed to join game, try again later). Unfortunately, that means the game is no longer playable on Proton. I haven't tried custom matches, but judging by what was mentioned above I don't expect that will work either. I'm using GE-Proton9-4 which worked fine prior to the update.

@krateng @All-The-Foxes the game got an update today and seems to have fixed disconnection issues on my side. Could you confirm?

It's still not working for me. Disconnects at the start of any game, quick match and custom, with error 50000.

Updated the OP with new information.
Added a new log file to the OP. For this one it generated 60MB in the ~30 seconds I was on the main menu, so I cut off most of the repeating stuff at the end; it's only 200 kB.

Can confirm still happend even in recent 9.20 GE version.

This issue continues to persist on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS with kernel 6.8.0-90-generic, an RTX 5090, Intel U9 285HX, NVIDIA driver version 580.95.05, and GE-Proton10-27.

@All-The-Foxes the game is working fine on my end with proton 10 and experimental. Are you unable to play at all or are you getting kicked at random? still error 50000? as far as I can see that has also happened on other platforms so that particular error seems like just some general connection issue, but if you've been unable to play for several months in a row there might be something in your setup causing issues.

Have you tried playing on windows with the same internet connection?

The issue is what's shown in the OP, that stutter that happens once per second.

The connection error thing was a game bug affecting everyone at the time.

@All-The-Foxes as your two previous comments were about the disconnections, I though the continued issue was about that. That aside, I've now checked the game on my amd desktop, nvidia laptop and steam deck on proton 10 and experimental, and the only stutters and hiccups I see are during loading screens.

Assuming you already have shader cache enabled on settings > download, I'd try updating your kernel first

Which distro are you using? The issue has persisted for me from Ubuntu 20.04 through 24.04, from kernel 6.2 through 6.8, from 6th gen Intel to 11th and now the 285 platform, from a GTX 1060 6GB to an RTX 3080 and now an RTX 5090, and yes shader caching is enabled. I can only assume the issue is somewhere in software since it's persisted through so many hardware upgrades, but at the same time this is the only game I've played that has this issue.

Ssimifor 2025-12-30 github

@All-The-Foxes arch, but I still you're better off trying a more recent kernel version rather than swapping distros. 6.8 originally came out almost 2 years ago

AAll-The-Foxes 2026-01-21 github

I completely forgot to check back in with the result. I installed the HWE kernel 6.14.0-37-generic and although it did not resolve the issue, it made the duration of each stutter much smaller. The NVIDIA driver is still the same 580.95.05 I had before the kernel update, just reinstalled.

So it's still not fixed. Funny enough I saw a YouTube video recently of a streamer having the exact same issue on Windows with another game and noted it down.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rhq_4tbwAE

They acknowledge it at 1:20 and then at 2:00 when gameplay begins you can really see it in action. So this issue isn't something specific to Linux and Proton. They didn't actually fix it, they just used a streaming service to play the game instead.

AAll-The-Foxes 2026-02-13 github

Well, good news. On HWE kernel 6.17.0-14-generic, Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, NVIDIA driver version 580.126.09, and GE-Proton10-30, this issue is no longer present. Three years of playing with a stutter every second and now it's gone. I was genuinely shocked when I launched the game just now after weeks of not playing and the stutter was absent.

Switching driver and Proton versions never had an effect on the issue in the past and I'm still on X11, though switching to Wayland didn't resolve it either, so it must just be the newer kernel that fixed the awful stuttering.
