Hello @lavadrop, this issue should also be mentioned to your video driver vendor.
Thank you @lavadrop for posting this, I think I too am having the same problem with Proton 8.0-4. I switched Resident Evil 4 (2005) to vulkan using re4_tweaks and it now works on 8.0-4.
I'm on x11 with nvidia 535.113.01-2

I did, thanks.
It looks like this is the same problem I'm having with Proton 8.0-4, everything was fine with 8.0-3 but the second it was switched not one single game using Proton 8 will load, I'll get some logs of games working in 7.0-6 & broken in 8.0-4 & post them here shortly with my current system specs.

I just noticed my gist is slightly out of date showing the older drivers, I'll change that shortly, the drivers I'm using are 535.113.01.
Alright well it seems my problem wasn't the same after all, it was a problem with nvidia's ForceCompositionPipeline (which I used to fix screen tearing on my old monitor).

Does your GPU hang and make your graphical session unrecoverable?

Not completely, it becomes totally unresponsive for a while but I can eventually alt-tab out of the game & get back to steam so I can stop the game.
EDIT: I just spotted skyve2222's latest comment & taking a chance I thought I'd uncheck the ForceCompositionPipeline box in Nvidia settings & that has fixed the problem for me, boy do I feel stupid right now. :)
Hi there!
I think it's the very same problem I'm facing. I opened a VKD3D issue because of it: https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/1738
You have some more examples in there. I think the most games that are crashing are on Unreal Engine 5 over DirectX 12.
ForceCompositionPipeline is disabled for me and it's still happening. Is it possible for it to be unchecked in nvidia settings but still active?
EDIT: it is indeed possible.
nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceCompositionPipeline=Off, ForceFullCompositionPipeline=Off }"
disables it, however it turns out that I just can't use my display at 60 (59.94) hz without it turned on. I have no idea why.
I also don't know why old proton versions don't cause it. Is this a bug in DXVK, or did they cease support for something that was needed for this to work?
I'm using a GTX 1080 Ti with the 535.113.01 driver.
Is there an update on this? I'm using nvidia driver 545 + Proton 8.0-4 and GE-Proton8-23 and my pc still completely freezes when opening games.
Some games might work if I set "PROTON_USE_WINED3D": "1" on the user_settings.py file from proton 8.

Proton games that use DXVK or VKD3D cause GPU hangs since last thursday, 2 days ago. I tried with Proton Experimental and the new Proton 8.0-4. Both Mesa 23.1.8 and 23.2.1 tested.
Games were working fine on Wednesday. I didn't change any packages between those days.
Problems started after The Talos Principle 2 Demo crashed. After that Starfield would crash in the middle of loading my save game. This is both in Wayland and x11 sessions.
Games that crash:
The Talos Principle 2 Demo
Starfield
Vulkan games that don't crash:
No Man's Sky
Quake 2 Remastered.
DXVK games that work:
Stray
VKD3D Games that work:

I tried but the size of the logs was too much for pastebin or github gist
