Hi!

I recently started steam for a casual game (fallout 4). Steam installed 250 megabytes of updates and i double-clicked the game in the library. Steam told me the game was running but it was not. So i used the steam UI to stop the game. Another try - same result. I opened the game settings and tried several proton versions. Same result in all versions i tried (8, 7, 6).

So i rebooted the machine, launched steam, opened the game settings for fallout 4 and removed the compatibility settings. So everything as it was before. One more try: The game starts. Funny, the reboot was necessary. In the game i noticed, that i can only use the "new game" button. No way to continue the game i started 1 month ago.

So i digged deeper and found the game files on my local ssd. The "remotecache.vdf" file contained all save games since i owned the game, the folder besides it contains many many saves. But the content of the remotecache.vdf does not look correct, most props are set to "0", checksums missing, timestamps missing, file size missing.

So i started a new game to see what a working save looks like. The new game can be resumed after closing and re-opening the game, so this seems to work. I backuped the game files and removed all saves except 1 for the new working game and 1 for the game i started 1 month ago. I entered the sha1 checksum manually, set the timestamps and size props. Everything seems to be correct from my perspective. Only 2 save games left and the integrity is the same for both.

So i launch the game and: no change. 3 Save games for the new game available but not the 1 i tried to fix. I quit the game and looked at the game files: steam has synced the "remotecache.vdf" file and its back to its content before i changed it.

So i opened the game settings and disabled the cloud feature. But its the same every time... Steam blew up my save games (this is user data! so its sacred!) and that's it.

I don't know which proton version is currently used by steam, no specific version is configured at the moment so i guess the latest is used.

This is extremely annoying, i don't see a point in playing a game over steam again if my save games are not save at steam!

What did i do wrong and what could i do to solve this issue?

Nothing extracted yet.
