Symptoms
By just starting the game, it stucks with black screen (mouse works). And after exiting it blindly, it reports DDRAW.DLL Error code = 8876086A.
The game comes with a ddraw.dll from DDrawCompat project, but it's not loaded by default because native ddraw is not enabled in wine registry; the ddraw.dll cannot work with Proton either, by using ddr
aw.dll from Cnc-DDraw and manually enable native ddraw in registry (or use environment variable) it can work.
(I manually edited the registry file to enable loading native ddraw, and this log is get by removing any ddraw.dll in game directory, which has the same symptom with just starting the game).

Just download and start the base game with Proton 8.0-5.
