Symptoms

The game proceeds to launch for a short short time and in that time it just shows a black screen and then it closes automatically
I tested it with all versions of proton 7 onward and it happened in all versions. i tested it even on Linux Mint 21.2/3, and Arch Linux (KDE Before, And Actually With Gnome). Neither with the command PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% Worked. I tested it with both generic kernel and zen kernels.

I have uploaded the log input in this issue report.

Reproduction

Open the game on proton 8.0-5

Hello @RaymondRunner, please copy the contents of Steam Runtime Diagnostics from Steam (Steam -> Help -> Steam Runtime Diagnostics) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report. Found it buried in the second half of the above gist.

DXVK is failing to initialize, which usually hints that your video driver's Vulkan render path is not healthy.

Kkisak-valve maintainer 2024-06-30 github

It looks like your NVIDIA driver install is broken or incomplete and Steam is being forced to fallback to llvmpipe (mesa's faster CPU renderer) to run at all. Check your video driver installation.

The NVIDIA proprietary driver requires that the driver's kernel module loaded into memory, 32 bit userspace libraries, and 64 bit userspace libraries are all installed and the exact same version to work properly. If you recently changed video driver versions, the previous kernel module version can still be loaded into memory and rebooting is the easiest way to clear that scenario.

apparently by some reason i had the 555 -1 and -2 drivers between the nvidia-utils and lib32-nvidia-utils even tough i installed the 550 stable in first place... so i am installing again the 550 drivers

I got a new log file. The game starts but shows a black screen and then shuts down again.

Hello @RaymondRunner, there a decent chance that there's a video driver sided regression. Retest with the NVIDIA 555 series driver.

Re tested with the 555 Drivers. Same behaviour, Opens up, Black screen and shut down.

Symptoms

Sonic Origins used to run fine on Proton Experimental since Friday evening. As of Saturday, after system update and or Proton Experimental update, Sonic Origins exits without error right after the Sega logo. Tried clicking again, steam says launching then nothing happens. It doesn't happen to most games I played under proton epxerimental (espeically recently played Dragon Quest XI) I made a reproduction to this underneath, but I just want to know if this is a regression or is it something on my end?

Reproduction

I switched to Proton version 9.0-4, the game launches just fine. Switched back to Proton Experimental, same crash without error/game unable to launch.

Hey! I even turned off my IGPU to debug if it's conflicting, but it didn't do anything. If it's a driver issue, then downgrade drivers would be a solution or do I need to remove the pfx folder?

Sorry about duplicating the thread. ><

@RyougaLolakie Thank you for reporting this. It should be working again on Proton Bleeding Edge

You're welcome! I'd figure the recent Proton Experimental update borked Sonic Origins as it was working fine before the update. If it is a driver issue, it would've affected all games working under proton or not. Thank goodness! I'll check it out proton bleeding edge once the denuvo error is lifted after 24 hours. Dang it, Denuvo!

Once again, thank you for the reply! :)

Hey, I'd apologized for not testing the game using proton bleeding edge due to real life stuff, but I'm here to confirm you that this game is fully working using the lastest version of proton experimental. Thank you very much! Will report back if it's broken again. :)

Hi, adding an update on this topic. the game now works thanks to a configuration where i added the vcredist2022 2019 2020, and dotnet674, 4.0, 6.9 (most recent versions.) to the proton configuration with the steam tinker launcher. also this fixed a hung that ocurred in Far Cry 4 (298110)

Yyllekz 2026-04-24 github

Ran into a weird issue where the game did launch, but now it won't. No idea what changed. Steam claims the game is running, but it obviously is not.

Ssimifor 2026-04-24 github

@yllekz More information is needed. Your hardware (gpu/cpu), kernel version, driver version, what proton version are you using and have tried as well as proton logs. To get proton logs you have to change the game's launch parameter to PROTON_LOG=1 %command% and then run the game, this will generate a log file in your home folder called steam-1794960.log that you will need to upload here, hopefully that'll give us more information about the issue.
