Compatibility Report

  • Name of the games with compatibility issues: American truck Simulator (forced to proton) and Elite Dangerous
  • Steam AppID of the games : 270880 and 359320

System Information

  • Proton version: 8, 9, experimental
  • Joystick VKB Gladiator NXT
  • Link to current full system information report : Gist reports (same issue with previous machine.)

Symptoms : buttons not recognized or recognized weirdly (nonsense) depending on the registry settings

Reproduction

To see the issue

  • set compatibility to the proton version you want to test
  • start the game
  • in controller configuration panel, try to set some buttons and axes

To solve the issue

  • add "Map Controllers" as a dword value 0 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\winebus
  • replace xinput by wine hid in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\WINEBUS\VID_231D&PID_0201\...

as described on reddit .What I described above is enough to get joystick work in proton 8 and 9 but not in experimental.

Since my issue got closed as a duplicate for this one, i want to say that i'm having the same issue as the OP. And wonder if there is a fix in the works or is everyone just using the workaround and not bothering. I don't like having to work around to make my stuff work. Please implement a fix into proton for this issue. Thanks

I can't say "it will work" but I just started protontricks on all my win32/64 games and don't think I modified anything on all of them as I don't need any joystick nor wheel everywhere. My VKB is now recognized with proton experimental (default version here)

But I did modify something on my system. Maybe this is why, maybe not. As mentioned on this issue I changed hidraw access. Only accessible by root means proton had to become root or not using it at all, which, to me, is wrong. I'll keep it until I find how to only give my joysticks to plugdev.
