Symptoms

This game launches fine - and the main menu is displayed in VR. Motion controls work, and the player can click the "new game" button. But then the VR rendering stops and the game only renders to pc monitor. Audio continues in VR but no graphics, just black screen.

The flatscreen version of the game runs fine on linux. Other VR games run fine, Carrier Command 2 is one of the exceptions that I can't get working.

On windows I am able to play the game in VR without issue.

Reproduction

Try to start a new game in VR

Hello @failboat78, Error [GENERAL | xrCreateInstance | OpenXR-Loader] : LoaderInstance::CreateInstance chained CreateInstance call failed looks like a line of interest from your log.

@kisak-valve I repeated this test using Valve Index (so not using quest or alvr). Experiencing exactly same problem with index.

Symptoms

Game runs fine in desktop mode

Game starts fine in VR mode, but as soon as you select "start game" (either campaign or custom) the VR display freezes. The monitor view however successfully shows the loading screen and loads into the game world, and will continue tracking the view angle of the headset and the positions of controllers

Reproduction

  1. Launch game in steamVR mode
  2. Select "Campaign"

So to add to this I did a little bit of digging on the wine logs and found that the issue is a openxr miss match for some reason. I had ran the game with the +openxr and the +loaddll debug flags. The following is the log of the game where I just went to the menu and tried to load a save.

steam-1489630.log

Now what I do not know is why there is a openxr miss match or why it works at the beginning and then stops working, what I do know is that the version listed in the log corresponds to version 1.1.36 openxr (should note my system runs the latest version) this is with proton 9.0.4 though, in proton hotfix the openxr version is listed as 0x34 which would correspond to version 0.0.52. This is very odd however I really do not have the knowledge to comment for the actual cause, I though I just turn in my findings.

Second log from proton hotfix

I see the same behavior with Proton 10.

I can put more information later, but, for me, this immediately crashes with Proton Experimental in VR right now. Everything seems fine outside of VR, regardless of Proton version.

I confirm this bug is still present, attaching my steamvr logs, a regular proton log file and a file with launch options PROTON_LOG=+vrclient,+openxr,+file %command%

For the record, this is how it appears in the gameplay: https://youtu.be/bHCDESpE88Y

There is a window on the PC screen that still responds to controls and shows some visual. But not in VR.

I also tried running with Proton Experimental and Proton Experimental branch bleeding-edge, same thing.

I was able to play Carrier Command 2 on WiVRn, a replacement/substitute for SteamVR and Steam Link. So the problem is not in proton. Proof: https://youtu.be/iDA_cOLFCtg

I opened a new bug report in SteamVR-for-Linux to reflect this new finding.
