If you don't mind a little bit of tinkering, i'd suggest you download NewDark and overwrite a couple of files on Thief II's installation directory. NewDark improves compatibility with newer systems (it's an unofficial "update"):
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085
You'll need to download t2_v119.zip, extract the contents of the new_dark.zip and contrib.zip archives into your T2 directory, and you are done (you may need to rename Thief2.exe to thief2.exe so that the old exe is overwritten).
It goes without saying that re-installing the game or "verifying local files" will undo this and you'll have to do it again.
I hope this helps
Thief 2 (211740)
Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3253.
@shoober420 posted on 2019-11-25T00:40:47:
Game has only low resolutions and bit depth, cursor flickers, and compatibility issues because of its age and vanilla engine limitations.
Installing T2Fix 1.27 fixes the issue for me (https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149669). Using 60Hz and VSync and/or framerate limiter to 60fps is necessary for proper movement speeds and game timing. Enabled PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 for Vulkan D3D9 wrapper.
Updated System Information gist.

The game start fine. But as soon as i start the game from the menu it crashes.
I think once i saw a errormessage about some videofile.
Start the game, then try to start the game from the menu.
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1```x1 2019-11
The game loads the main menu but it's extremely sluggish and when you actually start the game it immediately crashes. Basically the same issues as Thief Gold (Found here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/551#issue-354016634).
