It can see my ps5 controller, even has trigger haptics. I get the same error as you + it freezes when loading but music still plays. Just installed it so haven't had time to dive deep. Will dig in the next few weeks.

Do you happen to have an Nvidia card? I have a 3080 (driver 565, Wayland). I've played the game for around 10 hours now, but several of those has been trying to figure out why it sometimes hangs on load. I've experimented a lot but I haven't been able to reach a 100% conclusive reason for it yet. Although it seems like setting the graphics preset to "low" usually lets it load, and then when in game you can USUALLY set it higher again (but sometimes it will hang in the menu). Sometimes it seems like it's enough to change the upscaling, but sometimes that isn't enough. I'm not entirely sure, every time I think I've figured it out it hangs again at a later time.

Oh, and enabling Ray Reconstruction will cause a hang every time, which is quite sad.

The game will also start stuttering like mad after a while for reasons I can't quite discern; it's not out of VRAM, and the stutters will get reduced or eliminated if I bring up Mangohud...

EDIT: I've tried looking at the journal while this happens, but the only thing I see is:

kwin_scene_opengl: 0x502: GL_INVALID_OPERATION error generated.

I have a similar input problem with the steam version. The game starts but on the start screen the keyboard and gamepad are unresponsive. Somehow one time it worked and I could test the game a little bit, confirming it works ok. I can't make the gamepad work. Using experimental and ge-9-20.

Workaround: disconnect and connect again gamepad by wired

I got it working with cable but I play with Bluetooth when I can to sit on the sofa :/ not a workaround for me. Why is the steam input not working on this game?

System specs:

GPU: RTX 3080
Driver: 565.57.01
Proton: 6.12.1
OS: Arch Linux
DE: KDE

Initial testing:

Game launched successfully into intro
Paused first scene and enabled Ray Construction
After changing settings, unable to relaunch game
Re-downloaded to test suggested method (not changing settings until in-game)
Game launched fine with default Steam PE

Update 1:

Game now stalls at initial load (stuck on bottom-left logo)
Audio playing in background
GPU and CPU show activity
Same error persists

Update 2:

Successfully launched with PE-20
Reached Ultra settings without issues
Frame generation test:

Initially worked
Cutscene displayed black screen
Gameplay flickered between normal and black screen
Crashed while trying to disable frame gen

Update 3:
Current findings:

Once game hangs, subsequent launches fail (stuck on loading screen)
Successful launch sequence:

Start game
Wait until character movement is possible
Avoid changing settings
Avoid frame gen

Need to verify behavior with RTX lighting and reconstruction options

Workaround:

Only solution after hang is reinstallation (manageable with fiber connection)

Alternative workaround: Open game -> Steam Big Picture overlay -> Disable steam input -> Close overlay -> Open overlay -> Enable steam input -> Close overlay -> Controller should be recognised.

Same issue here. In Steam using Proton-Experimental the game launches properly but freezes right after hitting continue/load savegame in the main menu. In Steam it's unplayable.

Playing the game with Lutris though (yes, I bought it twice) it works flawlessly with Proton-Experimental as runner and a small self-written prelaunch script deleting the "ShaderCache" and "GLCache" folders each time hitting the Play-Button. The script is triggered directly by Lutris. Then the game is playable with the full feature set (Ultra-Settings, DLSS, FrameGen etc.) But I couldn't replicate this workaround for Steam.

System: Pop_OS! 22.04, Lutris v0.5.17, newest Proton-Experimental-Version, DXVK v2.4.1 or v2.5.1, VKD3D v2.13, D3D-Extras v2, DXVK-NVAPI v0.7.1, newest Steam-Version, Intel i5 13600K, Nvidia 4080 Super on v560.35.03.

If you delete those folders manually before launching in Steam, does everything work as expected?

Unfortunately not. I tried it in Steam deleting any game related folder containing the word "Cache" before launching the game, but in Steam it always freezes.

DDwarsen 2024-11-29 github

That is kind of strange. I checked the prefix and there are two folders, ShaderCache and ShaderByteCode, but not one called GLCache. That does seem to exist in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/shadercache/ but this game does not have an entry there. You'd think the same shader caches would be used regardless of whether you launch from steam or Ubisoft Connect.

Exactly. I couldn't understand the thing with the “GLCache” folder either.

DDwarsen 2024-11-29 github

If it's shader related we probably should try to bring it up with the vkd3d guys though? I'm not knowledgable enough to know whether that folder not being there means anything or not.

Ah! There is one here: https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/2092

It does describe the workaround mentioned though so I suppose that may be where you found it.

is it bad that this game was the reason that I dualbooted Windows again?

Llordbasimore 2024-12-01 github

Thank you for your commitment @Dwarsen ! I think the game simply deserves to be played. So it would be a nice Christmas present if one or two experienced developers could help the game reach its true glory! Aren't we Linux gamers the ones on the good side of the force? Thanks a lot!

I wrote a utility originally to fix Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora not recognizing some Xbox gamepads, particularly wireless ones. It also happens to work for this game so I'm posting about it here too.

It works by creating a second virtual gamepad which is a copy of the first using the uinput API. I discovered this after realizing that attaching multiple physical gamepads simultaneously caused previously non-functional ones to start working. I don't understand the mechanism of action here but it fixes the issue, at least on my machine.

It's available on my GitLab here as a compile-it-yourself C program and instructions for use can be found in the readme.

Since Steam switched "Proton Experimental" to the Proton 10 branch, this game freezes after loading into the game world just by walking a few steps. Switching the compatibility layer to "Proton Hotfix" fixes this and I can play for hours. This feels a lot like what we were seeing on other Ubisoft titles before but I didn't check if other Ubisoft titles are also affected now.

Well, I was having issues with this game. First part of the game ran pretty much ok but then when I got to Mirogana, first city in the game, FPS dropped (found out was the same as on Windows) but lag spikes began, between 10 and 15 seconds, I got a lag spike, maybe I could play a couple of minutes without one but it was annoying, everything else worked, FSR3, Frame Gen, etc.

Tried different distros, like Cachy OS, Nobara, Solus, different DEs, GNOME, KDE, but it was always this little stutters, lag spikes, FPS drops, call what you want.

So, just leaving this here in case someone has this issues, my system is Ryzen 5600X, 32GB RAM, 6900XT, 1TB NVME drive, and what "fixed" this for me, because now I'm playing without these spikes, high settings, 1440p, FSR3 + Frame Gen, 160 to 180FPS, was setting the 6900XT to highest clocks using LACT, I saw that GPU was at 1900Mhz when playing, set highest clocks with LACT then it jumped to 2200-2400MHz, stuttering, lag spikes, were gone, take it or leave it, this did the trick for me.

MMarkPronkin 2026-03-01 github

I had the same issue others have reported. The lag spikes and freezes were fixed by switching to Proton 9.

With Proton 10 and Proton Experimental, I get bad traversal spikes and freezes that don’t happen on Proton 9.

My main problem now is audio crackling, and sometimes the audio freezes/stops entirely. I’ve noticed this on every Proton version I’ve tried.

The only other report I found was on the Windows version, where the issue was linked to a slow SSD—but I’m running a PCIe Gen4 NVMe that does ~3,5 GB/s, so that shouldn’t be the cause. And honestly, playing with crackling audio is pretty unpleasant.

My hardware:
RX 6900 XT, i7 8700, 32gb ram DDR4 3200 MHz, 2 TB NVMe SSD.

I'm experiencing random crashes, at random moment. Sometime in cinematics, sometimes not. Sway is left broken, most of the surface are blanks.

hardware: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor, 46.9 G ram, HDD

Hello,
I'm experiencing the same stuttering issue as everyone else; it makes the game unplayable.

I have an RTX 5070 Ti, and it works with CachyOS Proton 9, but not with Proton 10.

Thanks
