Bad performance in every single game

Since around 2 days ago (03.12.2024) I have less than half the FPS (1/3 most of the time) in every single game when using Proton in Steam.

I don't know what changed, but it only affects "default" Proton, GE-Proton works fine.

Anything I could do to debug this?

Reproducible 100% of the time, did multiple restarts and even reinstalled GPU driver.

PS: Lutris using Proton with umu-launcher has the same issue, but it works fine with Wine-GE, I have not done any system update.

Example with The Forest:

Proton 9.0-3 (30fps, very high CPU usage low GPU usage)

GE-Proton-11 (100+fps, CPU and GPU load as expected in this game)

Have you tried clearing the wine prefix and verifying the game? I had a similar problem in overwatch 2, and clearing the prefix removed whatever ge-proton was using that made the performance worse on normal proton

Sadly I did try this already with no effect.

Actually I have always been using normal Proton for this game, but I suddenly had terrible performance without me ever touching the compatibility settings.

Are you by any chance on Linux kernel 6.11 using NVIDIA? They made some changes where after 6.10.10 some function has been renamed, and NVIDIA tries to call on the now non-existing function, thus making heavy lags (usually past 1-hour gameplay time). There's a chance kernel 6.12 might fix this, but no guarantee.

I am using 6.8.0-50-generic and Nvidia 560.35.03 on Ubuntu 24.04.

I don't think this is kernel related, but it also seems like I am the only one, I really wonder what is going on on my system.

Did you wait for a while? It might be due to shader compilation. Alternatively, it could be Proton selecting the wrong video card, such as LLVMpipe.

This is not the cause of the issue I am afraid, performance stays bad even when leaving it running for a long time.

Given that Mangohud shows the Nvidia GPU, I don't think it is rendering using LLVMpipe.

@zocker-160
did you find a solution? I am facing the same problem

Zzocker-160 2026-05-30 github

@RamAvni when using Proton 9 I still have this issue to this day, but Proton 11 works fine (using Nvidia 580.159.03)

As for The Forest I added WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=8:0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 to fix micro-stutters.
