Starting yesterday (Although the root of the issue could be from earlier), when launching some games through proton, the game will launch and play audio correctly, but will be invisible. Pressing super will show a spot in the spread of open windows where the game would be, but that spot will not have any actual window there.

This issue only occurs with windowed mode - when the game is run in fullscreen, it displays just fine. Additionally, when the game launches, it looks like it's trying to launch the game in fullscreen mode, but then fails to do so.

I have noticed this issue with two games so far: Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore and Age of Mythology: Extended Edition. It is possible the same issue is happening with other games, but it doesn't happen with all of them - Balatro and Elden Ring, as two examples, run just fine.

I have not previously had issues with AoM:EE, although I believe I last played it on Ubuntu 22.XX.XX LTS. I had not played Arzette before. Arzette itself launched fine originally, but when switching it from fullscreen to windowed, it started having the issue.

I have gotten the following log from Arzette:
steam-1924780.log

The following excerpts (from lines 2101-2102) appear to be the most relevant maybe?
0:00:00.113132829 15222 0x7f5f9802d400 ERROR WINE wg_source.c:423:check_decoding_support: pad <avdec_h264-0:sink>

I have attempted to run Arzette with Proton versions 6.3-8, 7.0-6, 8.0-5, 9.0-4, Experimental, Hotfix, Bleeding-Edge, and even GE-Proton9-22 (which I recognize is not supported by this project, but I thought to bring up anyway as it may be relevant). 6.3-8 refused to launch it at all, while the others all had the issue described above.

I have verified that my drivers (and all other packages) are up to date, at least according to apt.

Hardware specs are as follows:

  • Hardware Model: ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-ZAKU WI-FI

  • Memory: 64.0 GiB

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X3D × 16

  • Graphics: AMD Radeon™ RX 6800

  • Disk Capacity: 2.0 TB

  • Firmware Version: 1804

  • OS Name: Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

  • OS Build: (null)

  • OS Type: 64-bit

  • GNOME Version: 46

  • Windowing System: X11

  • Kernel Version: Linux 6.8.0-51-generic

Please let me know if further information is needed, or if this issue would be better reported elsewhere.

Appears to have been fixed in some update in the recent past. Closing this issue.
