Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Flashpoint Campaigns: Southern Storm
  • Steam AppID of the game: 2366530

System Information

I confirm:

  • [ x ] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [ x ] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Different symptoms per xorg or Wayland:

X (via openbox)

Game launches fine, but locks up entire Xorg session when any input is given; i.e., unable to use mouse, keyboard, etc. Only fix is to swap to a new TTY and pkill x.

Wayland (via labwc)

Game launches fine, and I am even able to launch into random scenarios. All attached game windows load in fine, except they are entirely unable to render anything to them (popups with text, statuses, etc). Game is wholly unplayable despite not locking up Wayland like it does xorg.

Reproduction

Xorg

  1. Launch game through Steam (any version of Proton).
  2. Launch game through Matrix Launcher Splash Screen.
  3. Attempt to click anything in the resulting application, only to have X lock up.

Wayland

  1. Launch game through Steam (any version of Proton).
  2. Launch game through Matrix Launcher Splash Screen.
  3. Start Scenario.

Hi, happy to report that thanks to the Proton 10 BETA both Red Storm and Southern Storm now seem to be working great with only some tiny visual issues such as context menus populating only on mouse over. No more crashes and orders etc. are working. :)

Woah, this is awesome news!! Confirming that on my machine, I'm able to play in both Wayland and Xorg with the Proton 10 Beta! :)

Thank you so much for keeping up with this thread, and thanks for such a quick response after the newest update!

You're welcome! The Wine 10 update must have finally implemented or fixed some fundamental calls that Southern Storm (and Red Storm) were using. I've been trying to get these games running for years and with Red Storm you could actually start a mission. But then you'd notice that in-game time measurements were totally busted. Reinforcement scripted to appear in 120 minutes would appear within a few seconds, orders would not work and so on. And as you know, Southern Storm didn't even start properly and even crashed my whole system a couple of times.

I noticed your topic a few months ago but I had almost given up hope. Guess it pays to be persistent. And major props to the Wine team and Valve to keep improving compatibility. :)

Valve and Wine's persistence is easily one of the best parts of having swapped to Linux :) I'm so glad we've got such active teams working on these things (even in random boundary cases like these).

My curiosity (especially with the upcoming Wargames sale on Steam) is whether this update also works for Command: Modern Operations; you wouldn't happen to have tested that game with the new update, have you?

Nope, sorry. I do think that Flashpoint Campaigns is a very specific case because it uses some Delphi-based engine and Delphi has been causing a lot of issues with older Wine versions. But worth a try, there is an old Command topic here on the Proton Github but it hasn't been updated since 2020.
