Solved: Needed to disable USB audio interface (my default audio), open a Proton game, close the game, reactivate USB audio interface, open a Proton game.
I've also had this issue for the last year. Any chance you could reopen the issue? In my opinion, restarting the USB audio interface whenever opening a game is not an actual solution, merely a workaround.
As an aside: I found another workaround which is to sidestep pulse/pipewire entirely by setting the game's audio engine to alsa via protontricks. E.g.:
$ protontricks -s "final fantasy"
Found the following games:
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH (2909400)
$ protontricks 2909400 sound=alsa
I only needed to perform the workaround once after the update that caused the failure. I have not had the issue since then
Strange... lucky you, I suppose. I have to do the audio off, launch game, audio on dance every time I want to start a proton game with pulse/pipewire. On all proton versions I've used so far (9, 10, various GE protons).
Only switching to alsa fixes it for good on my end. And that's still a manual step once per game.
EDIT: I'd still argue the issue should be reopened. Even if the workaround is a one-and-done thing for some users, it's still an issue with Proton that users need figure out how to solve and that'd ideally get fixed properly. I can also open a new issue instead if you'd like.
i am suddenly having this issue now. ive tried all kinds of work around but rly only thing working seems to be the on/off of my interface which is not great for my overall usecase of multimedia production.
Nothing extracted yet.
This happens with Proton versions Hotfix, Experimental, 9, and 8 on Assassin's Creed, Borderlands 1&2 (running Linux native version of 2 works, but Proton was a better solution before the update), CIV 3&5. I am assuming it is all Proton games and versions. The games worked fine the night before the update.
To replicate: Run Gentoo amd64 multilib systemd pulse-audio portage-maintained Steam, update GPU (1080TI) to nvidia driver x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-550.144.03:0/550::gentoo and kernel to 6.6.74-gentoo-dist. Attempt to open any Proton game. Some (like Assassin's Creed) will create a popup stating the sound card is being used by other applications, even after the minimum requirement popup stated there was an available sound card. Other games load with no warnings, but have no sound. Games that run natively on Linux, like L4D2, have no issues.
I ensured pulse-audio and alsa-plugins have the 32 bit libraries. Uninstalled and reinstalled all steam files including portage steam-launcher. Proton is not registering with pulseaudio.
Including the log file from attempting to run Assassin's Creed.
