Counter-Strike:Source worked last week, same with Team Fortress 2.

This week it fails to start - cstrike_linux64 segfaults.

Using this as launch options (but the result is the same if I remove the launch options completely):

It seems like launch option "-vulkan" or no launch option at all is broken since the february 2025 update of Counter-Strike:Source and Team Fortress 2.

Probably related:

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/02/counter-strike-source-and-day-of-defeat-source-get-major-updates-with-64bit-support/

Workaround:

Add "-gl" (also verified with "-gl -gl_enablesamplerobjects") as launch option.

This forces the use of OpenGL instead of Vulkan and now the game starts.

Also verified that this full launch option works:

LC_ALL=C PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% -console -novid -nojoy -high -noborder -noaafonts -tickrate 128 +cl_updaterate 128 +cl_cmdrate 128 +rate 128000 +cl_forcepreload 1 +fps_max 60 +r_dynamic 0 +cl_disablehtmlmotd 1 -gl -gl_enablesamplerobjects

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Command_line_options

Status:

I wouldnt call this fixed since the game segfaults upon start even with no launch options set (this shouldnt happen).

However a possible workaround if segfault upon start occurs is to add "-gl" or "-gl -gl_enablesamplerobjects" as launch option to force the game to use OpenGL which seems to resolve the issue (until the binary is properly fixed).

Hello @Apachez-, your assessment is correct, those Linux native Source 1 games are using DXVK by default and the DXVK version that's bundled with them requires a spec-compliant Vulkan 1.3 driver. The Vulkan driver for your Haswell hardware generation doesn't provide a spec-compliant implementation, and it also doesn't provide Vulkan 1.3. This isn't a game bug. Your workaround to use -gl to tell the game to run with ToGL is your best option.

Setting that aside, the Linux native variants of this game don't use Proton and Proton isn't involved here, which makes this feedback summarily out-of-scope for this issue tracker.

For the record I originally contacted Steam Support about this issue and was asked to also file this as a bug here at Valve - Proton Github.

Hopefully the issue of the binary segfaulting unless using "-gl" as launch option can be forwarded somewhere to be dealt with?

Seems like the error have returned...

No matter if I use this as launch options:

LC_ALL=C PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% -console -high -preload -noborder -noipx -nohltv -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -novid -NoQueuedPacketThread -enablefakeip -no_texture_stream -particles 512 -tickrate 128 +cl_updaterate 128 +cl_cmdrate 128 +rate 128000 +fps_max 60 +r_dynamic 0 +mat_specular 0 +cl_disablehtmlmotd 1 -gl -gl_enablesamplerobjects +mat_queue_mode 2

or just have it empty the binary will crash:

Any hot fixes to make it run?

AApachez- 2026-04-05 github

Only workaround I found was to revert to previous version (from 17 march 2026) of "Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper)".

I have filed this as a regression bug over at:
