After more searching today I found this issue https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/8548.
SELinux was clearly the issue, changes on both systems and now they can run the games again.
Too bad I didn´t find the solution right away.

SsafetyF1rst 2025-04-21 github

I have the same problem. Fedora 42. The problem occurred immediately after switching from version 40 to 41 and remains on 42. In an attempt to find out the cause, I came to the conclusion that all games on Unreal Engine 4 do not run. I tried switching SELinux to permissive mode, but it didn't work. audit.log has just that:

type=ANOM_ABEND msg=audit(1745200949.332:738): auid=1000 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=3 subj=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 pid=102889 comm="fossilize_repla" exe="/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/fossilize_replay" sig=6 res=1

Games run on proton versions no older than 7, but there is a problem with authorization - the machine name is used as login.
