Wholeheartedly agree. At the very least make it controllable through env. Regardless of how well Mutter works on some systems, these old windows decorations just look ugly as shit. First time I saw it I assumed something was broken.
Please revert this, I run into issues with lots of games (3 so far).
Is there an easy way to patch from the user-side for now? Is really bothering me.

I have compiled Wine before, but I haven't created a patch myself. Would you mind elaborating?
Is there any updates? If someone did a build for proton removing it, would you guys mind to share it?

i could fork it soon with the condition commented
Any progress on this issue?
Never noticed/had issues with focus loss myself (nvidia), but today wine's window and decorations interactions glitched so hard while alt tabbing a couple times in borderless fullscreen on resident evil that I had a new kernel panic in years 🤷🏻♂️
Downgraded to Proton 9 and it's way more well-behaved, looking forward to the mutter merge or a temp revert patch!

Can confirm. Alt-tabbing seems to cause the DE to freeze at times. Apparently Proton 9 doesn't have this problem.
is there a plan to have this fixed on either end at some point? or is there a workaround?

I don't think it's planned since they found it better to have it off. You could patch out the condition though and compile it.
proton experimentalx1 2025-05
Subsequent to some updates released lately, whenever running the wine64 binary of Proton Experimental with anything the borders and the title bars of windows instead of using the normal mutter behavior seems to be handling it self on its own. E.g.
