Creating a meta issue, as suggested by @alasky17 . Originally posted in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3898#issuecomment-2848541380

Symptoms:

  • Cursor remains invisibly captured after alt-tabbing out of the game when focus changes to a Wayland window.
  • In-game camera continues to follow mouse movement, even though the game should no longer have focus. (e.g., FPS games)
  • Games fail to mute audio or reduce FPS when in-game background settings are enabled (e.g., "Play sound in background: off").
  • This does not occur when switching focus to XWayland windows (e.g., Steam client).

Confirmed to occur on KWin 6.3.4+.

From my testing, the following Proton versions have this regression:

  • Latest Proton Hotfix
  • Last Proton 9 experimental
  • Proton 10 Beta
  • Proton experimental bleeding edge (as of writing)

It does not occur in 9.0.4.

This sounds like this could be what I'm experiencing on my Steam Deck (along with others), like described here by someone else https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues/1866

I have been using Proton Experimental to run World of Warcraft and the Curseforge client, and with Discord native/via flatpak.
Once the game starts up input is stuck there. I haven't been able to just swap from Experimental to 9.0.4 and still be able to run Battle.net without errors, maybe it would work fine if I reinstalled but I don't want to do that.

Been having this issue with WoW as well.
Started happening when I switched to Proton 10 or any wine version > 10.
Been seeing it using proton experimental and wine-tkg > 10.6.

Given that it is present in both proton and wine it seems this might be an "upstream" issue with wine?

Further info about my system:

CPU: 9800x3d
GPU: AMD 7900xt
OS: Fedora 42

@Maselkov Could you please try Proton - Experimental and see if that helps? Please let me know if you still see this "Wayland window only" focus issue with any games (and which games).

@flexd This issue would only impact folks using a Wayland desktop - the issue you linked looks like the correct place for reporting that as it seems to be a SteamOS bug, not a Proton bug.

As far as I understand, anything in Game mode on SteamOS is running Wayland? Possibly with/via Xwayland via gamescope https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope
This issue looks like it could be the cause/is causing what we are experiencing in the other issue on the SteamOS repo.

Anyway, I'm just hoping someone fixes this so I can get back to gaming :-D

Some quick testing does reveal that the issue has been fixed! Thank you!
