Proton_LOG=1
7.0-6: https://gist.github.com/EpicureanGit/cc8606d66863291024e3696beef99407
8.0-5: https://gist.github.com/EpicureanGit/e9074ca5c4735ab0a034122fe4e70225

Symptoms

The FPS remains ~25-30 in the menu and in-game using Proton 8.0-5 and Proton Experimental. I tried Proton Experimental first. A user at protondb recommended Proton 7.0-6 so I tried it and my FPS with VSYNC on was 60 and without VSYNC on it was ~110 at 1440p with graphics settings on High. I then tested with Proton 8.0-5 and it performed poorly like Proton Experimental, so the issue started somewhere between Proton 7.0 and 8.0.

Reproduction

Play Persona 5 Royal with Proton 8.0-5 or Proton Experimental.

Symptoms

My computer hard crashes as soon as I enter a specific map.
I have already excluded any other program running in the background, I have excluded it might be related to how long the game has been running and I have excluded the fact that it can be any other game. I tested this with the three different proton version listed above and consistently every single time I enter into that map and walk towards the objective as soon as the objective target tries to get loaded it kills my computer. Something about loading that asset annihilates my machine and I do not know why.

Reproduction

  1. Boot up the game and load a save file for the very early stages of Madarame (II act in the game) post gallery visit, when going to his house.
  2. Pass from the train station and load the map "Shibuya Station Square" heading to his house.
  3. Hard crash (no kernel panic or anything, straight up turn off machine and fans immediately).

Watch video from minute 6:50 to 7:40m, that is the crash area, the video ends when my computer dies (https://youtu.be/gRdI8wheQcw)

Quick update, the game doesn't present this issue on my Steam Deck, since I am running Bazzite could this be a problem with the Fedora downstream based distros?

P.S.
I cannot make further tests for 24h because testing the game on my Desktop, then on my Steam Deck and then on my Desktop again angered CODEFUSION something that gave me a 24h suspension from playing the game... will be able to make further testing in a day...

PPlarpoon 2025-07-11 github

Speaking of CODEFUSION, is it possible that there is an anti-theft check exactly at that point of the story in that plaza and it fails for who knows what reason on Bazzite crashing everything? Because it's odd that the game worked absolutely perfectly until that spot and consistently dies on it every time. I also noticed that when you move a bit further away on that plaza the camera suddenly locks and you get to see the characters from far away, so if it's not CODEFUSION it might be the camera trigger that makes my GPU crash hard.

I would be curious to know if anyone else has any theory on this problem.. After the 24h halt pass I will be playing that part of the story on my Steam Deck and then continue on my PC saving past it!

PPlarpoon 2025-07-13 github

UPDATE:
I have skipped that part by playing it on my Steam Deck as previously mentioned, played the entire second chapter of the story successfully on the machine that was supposed to freeze without having a single hiccup once, multiple times also getting back to the same plaza.

Until once where I stayed there for overly long amounts of time and it just hard crashed my computer, right now.

For the sake of the argument, much heavier parts of the game have happened in front of me on the same game so I can 100% exclude some sort of PSU or resources load issue, it's just something to do with that plaza. Also I now know for a fact this is a problem relative to the location and not the story part.

PPlarpoon 2025-07-13 github

I think I narrowed down where the issue resides, I started suspecting a bad combination of shader compilation that happens exclusively on a specific spot of the plaza in question, exclusively on that specific map and nowhere else.

I have tested the game with "RADV_PERFTEST=dmashaders %command%" enabled for a bit now and I didn't get the error again, will update this thread again if another event like this happens again but if I write nothing that means the problem is resolved.

Very important related information on this, I have Above 4G decoding and Resizable BAR enabled, I suspect this error would have never happened if I had them disabled.

I have a reason to strongly suspect a MESA bug.

@kisak-valve I am sorry to ping you directly, I just want to know what is the most proper procedure when dealing with Valve's proton. Should I bring the issue directly to MESA or since this version of MESA is embedded in Proton I have to let Valve sort this problem on its own?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Yes, if the evidence points towards a video driver issue, then it's best to run it past the video driver dev(s).

i have similiar issue in Fedora 44 the FPS always between 20-30 everywhere in the game

GPU: Nvidia 3060
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
Driver Version: 595.71.05
Kernel Version: 7.0.10

I already tried every version of Proton since 7.0-6 and GE-Proton since 9-11 until the latest version as the time i'm writing this

I have this exact same issue on a laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon 780M Graphics. Mangohud shows that the game is barely using 10% of my CPU and around 20% of my GPU. Seems to be CPU-bound. On my main PC, this game runs fine at 120fps, and my gaming PC's CPU is technically slower (Ryzen 7 3800X). The difference is that I have a dedicated GPU, but since it seems to be a CPU issue, and other people have the issue WITH a dedicated GPU, it's probably unrelated. Same proton version on both machine (proton-cachyos-11.0), same kernel version (linux-cachyos-7.0.11). I don't think it's a problem with my hardware because this laptop can run games that are orders of magnitudes heavier to run than persona 5 with no issue and triple the fps. Persona 5 just refuses to even attempt to use my hardware.

Though, reverting to Proton 7.0-6 seems to make the game playable for me, unlike @a-wip0

Can confirm this regression still exists. On Ryzen 5950X & RX 9070 XT I'm getting stable a 4K120 with Proton 7.0, and upon testing with an FPS Unlocker mod up to 280fps in main menu. When using a later Proton version I struggle to reach 100fps even when lowering to 1080p. In both cases I'm CPU-limited but not nearly as much on Proton 7.0.
