Hi! I just switched from Windows 10 to Ubuntu and I'm encountering a mystery. I tested three games that can be run natively without any Proton, and they all ran perfectly. (Rhythm Doctor, Penny Larceny, and A Short Hike.) Steam remembered my save data from Windows.
Then I slapped the toggle in Settings> Compatibility, and I tested four other games that only launch if that toggle is on. AKA, games that only work with Proton. (UFO 50, Mail Mole, Temple of Snek, and "Toodee and Topdee".) All of them didn't remember my data, the games just said "New Game." There was no error with steam cloud, no notice of cloud conflict, that looks normal on my end.
I was simply using steam defaults, which starts out on Proton Hotfix. I switched to a couple other versions when troubleshooting, but no luck.
Since that was messing up, I returned to Windows (via dual-boot) and ran these games again. Toodee and Mail Mole have their save data intact, but in Temple of Snek and in UFO 50, it still shows only "new game" as if it's a completely fresh save file. Steam must have... committed the "fresh" game state to steam cloud memory back when I was on Ubuntu, so now Windows is getting that too.
Can anyone please walk me through the process of resolving this situation? Let's focus on UFO 50 since that one is most important to me.
-I do not use offline mode and this is all about a single account.
-I did read the Steam Cloud FAQ and found this part:
"If you are not seeing your most recent progress and you have double-checked that the game uses Steam Cloud on its store page, either Steam was not able to sync successfully with Steam Cloud before closing, or the sync resulted in a previous version of your data being uploaded to the cloud. It’s possible that the original file or progress is still on the older machine, but was unable to sync. It may be possible to launch Steam from that machine and see if it will Sync the game. If that works, the progress should be available on the newer machine the next time you launch."
So that's what I did. Like I described, I went back to Windows and launched UFO 50 again, and it still has lack of any savedata.
-I did refresh local hardware and test online connection. I don't have software that monitors system/disk/network activity on Ubuntu, and that's where the problem began. Besides, it only took effect on the games that require Proton enabled for them to launch.
-I have no plans to return to Ubuntu, so let's focus on getting the save data back on Windows. (I will move to Bazzite later in the week, though. But one thing at a time.)
