Symptoms
The game/demo does launch, but only shows a complete white screen. Alt-Tab'ing doesn't change or help, it keeps showing nothing but a white sceren. System is otherwise still responsive. (all) other games I've tried work just fine on this system.
Even after waiting a long time (many minutes) the white screen doesn't change. The game was eventually stopped using the "Stop" button in Steam.
Since my system uses Wayland by default, I also tried it from an X11 session, but same result.
Reproduction
This happens 100% of the time for me, no matter what Proton version I try (including but not limited to: 10 (beta), 9.0-4, experimental, hotfix).
I also know it starts just fine on a (physical hardware) Steam Deck.
