Symptoms

Audio is crackly, starting when I start loading my save. The game doesn't seem to be running slowly or having rendering problems. Happens regardless of quality settings. I've had similar problems with other Unity games in Proton.

Reproduction

  1. Start new game with default settings.
  2. Hit esc to skip the intro movie.
  3. Play the tutorial. I started getting crackly audio around when I placed the spaceport, which is a dozen or so clicks in.

On low quality, the Steam overlay shows me as getting about 30/60 FPS on low settings. (Weirdly, it's sometimes slightly below 30 and sometimes slightly below 60, never in between.) Audio crackling doesn't seem to be affected by frame rate.

Image

On medium quality, it's the same story but with 20 and 40 FPS. Audio crackliness isn't noticeably different from low quality.

Image

Audio crackliness seems to depend on the number of objects, not how many are in view or how much is being simulated. Here's a mid to late game save, paused and looking off the corner of the map, and the audio is much more crackly.

Image

The same save with the camera pointed at a bunch of animated meshes and unpaused has a lower frame rate but the same level of much more crackly audio.

I got to research farming and electronics but no stutters here, this kind of audio issue is usually affected by system audio configuration and cpu power. You can play with audio latency by using PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=.

Could you try PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command% ? you set it in the game's properties, the value can be increased if the stutters continue.

PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC does indeed fix the problem!
