Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Witchfire
  • Steam AppID of the game: 3156770

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x ] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Both games play extremely well, temporarily and then ultimately hang. Usually, within a short amount of time. Sometimes video freezes and audio continues. Sometimes, with Doom: The Dark Ages the bug report utility will launch seemingly indicating a crash of the game client. However, Witchfire does not crash, has to be manually terminated. Steam will not terminate the process properly. Has to be manually killed outside of Steam.

Acts like a "memory leak" type of situation. However, I have been unable to determine if it happens at an exactly reoccurring time. Doesn't seem like it, but it's fairly consistent. In Witchfire, start a round and after 5-10 minutes it will hang.

Reproduction

Start up game. (Witchfire) Start a run on any map. Begin playing, everything will be fine for a few minutes and then at some point it will hang. Changing settings appears to have no impact on it. Can run the game on ultra settings with everything maxxed and it hits high frame rates. Does not appear to be an issue with resources or hardware being unable to handle the load.

Have experimented with switching back to X(logging in), versus Wayland. No difference. Experimented with disabling features that might not be feature complete or bug free in linux, like Upscaling(DLSS), Reflex, HDR. No difference.

Witchfire has worked at times in the past. Have been able to complete runs, previously. Possible recent change in last several weeks? Tough to estimate because I believe it also crashed/hung when I first tried using it. Shelved it for a bit, knowing it was in early access and might be very buggy. Resumed playing and it worked for a bit and then started experiencing issues. Can't complete a single run at all. Despite it running flawlessly, until it hangs.

Doom: The Dark Ages a recent acquisition. Similar behavior. Works flawlessly and then tends to crash after a similar amount of time. Doesn't seem to crash during in-game cinematics, however. Maybe that's coincidence.

I have had a similar "memory leak" bug occur in the past in OverWatch 2. I opened a bug report and was alerted of a command line option to disable the overlay. Apparently, there is a known bug with it. Which did immediately resolve my issue. Have used that command line on EVERY game since. However, that has not helped with either of these games. Command line option is "LD_PRELOAD="" %command%" Tried Witchfire without this command line, still occurs. My understanding is that bug may currently be resolved with the overlay.

For how well both games play, this behavior/bug is rather frustrating. Everything works flawlessly, regardless of how far I crank the settings up or down and then just the hang occurs at some point.

Surprised how well Doom: The Dark Ages plays, holding 77-100+ fps unless path tracing is enabled. Which, I do not use.

I would love to troubleshoot this issue more, but I have no idea how to. Wondering if I'm hitting an issue with one of the newer libraries in use in Fedora(42), as it appears other people are not experiencing these issues. Also using fairly recent kernel.

Hello @Latecloser, this needs to be evaluated on a per-game basis and can not be generalized. Let's use this compatibility report to focus on Witchfire. Feel free to add a note to #8690 with your experience with Doom.

Please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.)

OK. Focusing on Witchfire first.

Added command line option, ran game. Uncommon run occurred where I was actually able to make it through the "run" before it hung. It did hang, two seconds after I arrived back at "home base". It lasted significantly longer than normal. I guess I just got lucky to make it back, before it hung.

Attaching log file...

Video again froze. Audio continued, I believe. Steam was unable to stop process when I clicked on "stop". I had to manually end process.

I have a similar problem, the game freezes in certain repetitive locations.
