Proton Log

Symptoms

All cutscenes are replaced with a test card (SMPTE color bars, with analog static noise in one section). Sound of the cutscene does play as expected.

I have one linux account on my machine, with 2 steam accounts associated. One account plays cutscenes just fine, the other does not.
Switching to GE-Proton10-15 seems to fix the issue. This, combined with more mentions of this issue on protondb suggests a Proton issue.
An issue exists on Windows for this game where cutscenes do not play, screen stays black and may crash. Root cause seems to be missing Microsoft Media Foundation, eg a stripped Win11 installation (tiny11). On Proton the screen does not turn black but shows the test card instead.
The native Linux build is not affected, but it is unplayable due to controller issues.

Reproduction

Start a new game. The first loading screen shows a poem, waiting/skipping it plays a cutscene where the issue could be present.
Alternatively, use the bell beast/bellway fast travel where another cutscene plays.

@littlegamer87 while logged in into the account that can't play the videos, run this in your terminal steam steam://unlockh264/ and then try to run the game and see if the videos play.

@simifor that works indeed. I confirmed the issue was still there, closed the game and ran the command and the videos play as intended

Don't fully work with 3840 x 2560 (3:2) 4K+ Huawei Mateview 28 monitor

System Information

[!NOTE]
I could help testing other proton versions, let me know if this would be helpful.

Symptoms

I have a Huawei Mateview 28 which has a weird 3:2 ratio at 3840 * 2560 @ 60Hz (via DP cable). I noticed some games don't fully work in "full screen", more details below.

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong (1030300):
    • Fullscreen mode: changing to fullscreen freezes the game window and forces focus on the game window (i.e. trying to change to another windows via either "Win" key or "alt + tab" would focus the display back on the game)
    • Boardless mode: similar for "3840 x 2560 @ 60 hz", but when I click on 3840 x 2160 it seems to stretch the window vertically and completely fill up the screen (and showing resolution as 3840 x 2560).
    • Windows mode (full screen off): shown 3840 x 2560 when it's only taking part of the screen
