Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Transcendence
  • Steam AppID of the game: 364510

System Information

I confirm:

  • [X] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [X] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

On some versions of proton, music will never play in the game.
On any version <=7, music works fine. On any version >7, music will not play. Other sound effects function correctly on all tested versions.
This includes 8, 9, 10, hotfix, experimental, as well as GE for all these versions, CachyOS, and TKG.
Downgrading to proton 7 is not a viable fix because it introduces stability issues, which are absent in modern proton versions. The game runs perfectly on modern proton versions, barring the complete absence of music.

Reproduction

Install the game via Steam, run with any current version of proton. When functioning normally, music should play as soon as the game loads and enters the main menu. However, it does not.
Switch to proton 7 or below and run the game again, the music should now function. You will hear it immediately upon entering the main menu.

Further information: I found a setting to run the game in soundtrack debugging mode. The relevant error seems to be:
"2025-11-24 14:54:04 [1b0] MCI ERROR ProcessPlay MCIWndOpen [TranscendenceIntro.mp3]: Invalid MCI device ID. Use the ID returned when opening the MCI device."

Manually replacing the mciqtz32.dll(s) drivers found in a current version of proton, with the mciqtz32.dll of proton 7, resolves the issue.
