Symptoms

Simple installing and running instantly gives a "Failed to load plugin" error, then the game locks up and doesn't go further:

After installing mfc42 via protontricks the game runs, but on the first run it shows 2 error messages ("E_NOINTERFACE", then "NameError: name 'check_for_end' is not defined") and locks up after starting a new game:

On the second run it shows another error ("The specified alias is already being used in this application. Use a unique alias.") after starting a new game and while ingame it shows a color bar picture in the top-left corner of the screen:

But if to save the game and load it on the next run (instead of starting a new game), it starts fine without that color bar pic (since it doesn't play any intros in this case, I suppose).

Reproduction

Install and run the game (without installing mfc42.dll and with installing it).
