I also had this issue on my Steam Deck running the same OS & DE so I was able to reproduce this problem on 2 computers
Hello @Hatboxforses, for tracking purposes, we're using one compatibility report per game title. Let's use this issue report to track Aeruta. Please open a second compatibility report focusing on Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
Could you try in other desktop environments? I tried with gnome 49.1 and plasma 6.5.3 and neither had freezing issues on proton 10 on my end, so I think there's a possibility it might only affect older gnome versions
I'll try it on kde with my sister's computer in a bit but for now here is what the issue at least looks like for future reference:

I also reread the info I had which said "DE: GNOME 49.1" which I cross referenced with fastfetch to be correct so there's probably another difference that is affecting this instead of the gnome version although tbf I also put mesa version 2 times so maybe don't listen to me
@Hatboxforses indeed you did, I must have glossed over it when I read it originally. My mesa version is slightly newer (25.2.7) though I wouldn't expect that to make a difference.
Also looks like the game gets pillarboxed on your end, guess 5:4 monitors aren't common nowadays and a lot of devs don't take them into account. There's a possibility that might be a factor as well, if you happen to have another monitor around it's wroth checking if it happens to have an effect. Unfortunately, I don't have any 5:4 monitors, but I can at least check with a 16:10 display tomorrow.
The game defaults to a borderless window, is this what you were using? does it also happen when fullscreen or windowed?

I haven't tested on my sister's pc because it's like 3 am(which is the same specs exept she uses kubuntu) but I set the game to fullscreen & this also happens on Steam Deck which is 16:10 (same Distro & DE) the only time this didn't happen was when it was windowed(borderless windowed also has this issue) or wined3d was used but if this is fixed it might also fix hkia which is why i referenced it in the original post but hkia has 5:4 support natively & is also fixed by using wined3d so it's technically possible that it's an issue with 5:4 although very unlikely
@Hatboxforses So far I've tried, steam deck with steamos and kde plasma, amd desktop on arch with 2k 16:9 monitor on plasma and gnome, nvidia laptop on arch with 1980xx1200 16:10 built-in display on plasma and gnome. No freezing on my end.
I tested on my sister's pc with no issues either which she also doesn't have the weird mouse cursor issue either
Difference in computer:
OS: Kubuntu 25.10 (Questing Quokka) x86_64
Display (LG ULTRAGEAR): 1920x1080 @ 144 Hz in 27" [External]
DE: KDE Plasma 6.4.5
Kernel: Linux 6.17.0-6
Mesa: Mesa 25.2.3
Swap: 500.36 MiB / 512.00 MiB (98%)
It could just be a mesa issue or the compositor is somehow broken
I just got my apt upgrade history for now-19th incase that somehow helps by doing: grep "upgrade " /var/log/dpkg.log

Anyone reading this should know that there is a "fix" which is to set to borderless fullscreen. This is still definitely a bug considering it is still an inaccuracy in wine/proton but there is at least a way to run the game without issues.
