Symptoms

  1. The game runs really well under the Proton Experimental compatibility layer; however, crashing will occur after loading into a battle. After about a few seconds, the game will freeze and stop responding.

This might be due to the Steam overlay, adding LD_PRELOAD="" %command% in the launch options stops the crashing.

  1. Video files do not load.

The only real fix for it is to put PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% in the launch options, and switch to Proton GE. The WineD3D renderer runs really slow at high resolutions for me, so I keep the resolution at "800 X 600" for both "Strategic Map Resolution" and "Battlemap Resolution."

  1. Downloading shader pre-cache causes game to not start.

Reproduction

  1. Launch the game with the Proton Experimental version.
  2. Start a tutorial mission and load into the game.
  3. After a few seconds, backout of the tutorial mission.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for about 3 to 4 times.
  5. Game will freeze.

On Kubuntu 20.04, the game works following those howto from Ragnaman: https://steamcommunity.com/app/345240/discussions/0/3814032755151257565/

  1. Check local files of game from steam library,
  2. copy shogun.exe to the launcher folder
  3. delete launcher.exe from launcher folder
  4. rename the copied shogun.exe to launcher.exe, inside the launcher folder
  5. now set the compatability to use proton version 6
works flawlessly in 1440p, no issues like windows users having (inability to control units)

in my case Proton 6.3.8, including movies/cut-scenes also works.
Sometimes game crashes for no obvious reason (maybe Steam Overlay), not yet tried to add LD_PRELOAD="" %command% or PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% options.

@GumboCode @krzyklo the game is working on my end with proton experimental without extra changes, videos load as well and the game hasn't crashed for me. However, I've noticed there's a chance the game will hang when alt tabbing (though, I haven't gotten it to happen at native res)
