Tomb Raider II :
--> when game launches, I obtain only a black window. In fact the setup dialog window is placed behind the black windows, press escape to bypass and launch the game
--> main menu has no music

Symptoms

Game launches, but is forced into windowed mode (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tomb_Raider_II#Window_border_visible_in_fullscreen_mode). This happens on Windows as well.

@shoober420 I'm able to launch the game in full screen but I get black screen only during FMVs (game itself is showed as expected). If I run the game on Windowed mode the FMVs are displayed but not maximized in the top left corner.

Currently I see this issues with proton 5.0-4:

  1. FMVs not working on full screen
  2. FMVs not maximized and fixed to the top left corner of your monitor when running on windowed mode (the video will disappear or get chopped if your game window is not fully covering the top left corner)
  3. Full screen fixed to 640x480 with 16 bit colors
  4. CD soundtrack executing wrong tracks since proton 5.0 (4.11 version would execute music and game effects correctly but with a big stutter when trying to run an specific sound effect). This bug makes the game unplayable as it runs history dialog tracks in main menu/during game play.

IMO the first issue to address is the number 4. Fixing this issue would make the game fully enjoyable.

Hello @Marco-GG, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, reproduce the regression, and drag and drop the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box.

@kisak-valve I attached the logs as you requested. Proton 5 logs doesn't give much information but proton 4.11 (were music and effects works as expected) shows many errors related quartz. A google search pointed to gstreamer related issues... but I can't 100% sure as my knowledge of wine is almost null.

BTW TR2 hangs on Proton 4.11 whenever you try to close the app or randomly when Lara dies (this issue is not present on Proton 5.0).

Symptoms

Input get stuck or messed up, the jump key gets stuck and kill me. Game crash and freezes, at specific places, and for some time before menu.

On windows I used to play this game with https://github.com/Arsunt/TR2Main with steam input, it worked grate. Now on proton everything seem to work the same and I also get rumble support from this method. except is not stable enough to play. Im happy to see it is working.

Reproduction

connect a ps4 to Bluetooth
activate steam input in settings
run tomb raider 2 setup
make sure there is only 1 xinput controller enable. menu is grayed out.
play the game

I found another bug in Tomb Raider II:

  • Just open it in windowed mode
  • Set focus in other window. e.g: Google Chrome
  • Back to the game
  • The game does not receive any input so you need to close the game
