Symptoms

Game suffers from major CPU bottleneck, because of this maintaining 120fps is impossible. This is especially bad since the Katana Engine requires the frame cap to be met, in order to have proper frame pacing. Thus locking the game to 60fps and relying on frame gen is the only option. But whenever FSRFG is enabled, the game proceeds to crash without exception.

Reproduction

  1. Start game.
  2. Go to settings and activate frame gen.
  3. Leave settings panel.
  4. Game should crash without exception.

@kisak-valve This issue also applies to the release version of the game.

@neon-grim is this a proton issue? When I compared against windows performance was neck to neck comparing the same location at low and very high presets.
This was with a 9060 XT, 7800x3d, mesa 25.3.4, proton experimental.
Also wanted to compare with a 9070, but I hit the 120 fps cap with that, so I cannot really compare if there are performance differences with windows.

Something very strange I am running into is that the game will randomly stall the GPU out for ~500ms each time. Is anyone else running into this issue? I've tried a few things but nothing seems to help...

Edit: After further testing, this seems to be entirely related to resolution. Reducing the resolution or the minimum upscale render resolution reduces the issue. Even on the lowest settings with render resolution set to native 3440x1440 (no upscaling), the issue happens constantly, so I think something is just broken with the game.

Edit: This doesn't happen on the same PC running under Windows 11, so it's somehow related to running it under Linux.
Here's some more info in case anyone has any ideas what it could be, this doesn't seem to be happening to everyone:

It appears to be. As far as I know, fsrfg doesnt crash on windows.

CPU bottleneck is an issue across systems. I cant say if proton makes it worse. The problem is that this game apparently loads everything you can see, which just smashes the CPU.

I dont know if the extra FoV of 5120x1440 is making things worse, since there is more on screen, but holding 120fps flat is very hard for my hardware.

I tested again with lowest settings and I was able to maintain 120fps, it seems that the grass density setting has a major effect on performance. The game still chugs depending on area, since it still very much CPU bound, but it looks like things have improved. I'm currently running at 3440x1440 75% res scale. If needed I can post my other settings.

I also noticed that disabling rebar with VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv seems to have a measurable effect on performance, since it reduces the CPU load by a bit.
