Symptoms

Steam starts the game but it's stuck in a black screen and the only way out is to kill the process.

Also, Steam becomes impossible to interact with even after the game's process has been killed, unless I right click the Steam icon in the tray, then quit Steam from there. Steam then goes back to normal and closes itself properly.
