Symptoms

On Fedora 44 / GNOME Wayland / Steam Flatpak, Gothic 1 Remake detects and/or uses incorrect XWayland desktop dimensions when GNOME fractional scaling is enabled on a 4K primary monitor.

With the primary 3840x2160 monitor set to 125% GNOME display scaling, Steam logs report:

Desktop state changed: desktop: { pos: 0, 0 size: 9024,5120 } primary: { pos: 2880,1664 size: 6144,3456 }

In this state, the game appears to enter a runaway high-resolution path in seamless/borderless fullscreen. The in-game resolution selector is locked/greyed out, and performance is extremely poor.

Changing GNOME display scaling for the 4K monitor from 125% to 100% makes Steam report the expected physical primary monitor size:

Desktop state changed: desktop: { pos: 0, 0 size: 5280,2992 } primary: { pos: 1440, 832 size: 3840,2160 }

This fixes the runaway 6144x3456 resolution issue.

Even after that workaround, performance is still lower than expected for the hardware. At 3840x2160 with DLSS set to Balanced in-game and several expensive settings reduced, performance is often around the 50 FPS range outdoors, only briefly exceeding 60 FPS in simpler/indoor scenes.

Current reduced settings tested:

sg.ShadowQuality=1
sg.GlobalIlluminationQuality=1
sg.ReflectionQuality=1
sg.PostProcessQuality=1
sg.EffectsQuality=1
sg.FoliageQuality=1

Other notes:

  • VSync disabled.
  • Frame limit disabled.
  • Textures left at medium/high.
  • Other currently played Proton games on this machine do not show this runaway-resolution behavior or comparable performance collapse.

Gamescope observations:

  • Host gamescope launched via Steam Flatpak with:
flatpak-spawn --host gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -w 3840 -h 2160 -r 144 -f -- %command%

This caused:

Proton: No compat data path?

and host gamescope crashed with SIGSEGV. The coredump was in /usr/bin/gamescope from Fedora (gamescope-3.16.23-1.fc44) with stack traces in NVIDIA/Vulkan pipeline compilation.

  • Using the gamescope binary inside the Steam Flatpak extension launched the game:
/usr/lib/extensions/vulkan/gamescope/bin/gamescope

This reports:

gamescope-brokey version 3.16.24

However, it did not solve the in-game seamless/borderless resolution behavior. Windowed mode respected configured resolutions such as 2560x1440, but switching/maximizing/fullscreening the game caused it to return to the incorrect high-resolution path when GNOME fractional scaling was active.

Reproduction

  1. Use Fedora 44 with GNOME Wayland.
  2. Use Steam Flatpak.
  3. Use Proton 11.0 Beta for Gothic 1 Remake.
  4. Set a primary 3840x2160 monitor to 125% GNOME display scaling.
  5. Start Gothic 1 Remake.
  6. Use the game's seamless/borderless fullscreen mode.
  7. Observe Steam reporting the primary display as 6144x3456.
  8. Observe that the in-game resolution selector is locked/greyed out and the game performs extremely poorly.
  9. Set GNOME display scaling for the same monitor to 100%.
  10. Restart Steam/game.
  11. Observe Steam reporting the primary display as 3840x2160, fixing the runaway-resolution behavior.

Expected behavior:

  • The game should not receive or use the inflated 6144x3456 XWayland-scaled desktop size as its fullscreen/borderless render target.
  • The resolution selector should expose usable display resolutions.
  • Proton/XWayland should provide a sane display mode list or avoid causing the game to lock itself to the GNOME fractional-scaling backing resolution.

Nacon REVOLUTION X Unlimited rumble works in Hogwarts Legacy but not in Gothic 1 Remake

Current Behavior

I can reproduce an issue with controller rumble/vibration on my SteamOS gaming PC.

System:

  • SteamOS 3.8 Stable
  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • Nacon REVOLUTION X Unlimited controller

Both Hogwarts Legacy and Gothic 1 Remake are running with Proton Experimental.

The controller's rumble/vibration works correctly in Hogwarts Legacy, but does not work in Gothic 1 Remake.

This happens on the same SteamOS system with the same controller and the same Proton compatibility tool.

Steps To Reproduce

  1. Boot into SteamOS Gaming Mode.

  2. Connect a Nacon REVOLUTION X Unlimited controller.

  3. Configure both Hogwarts Legacy and Gothic 1 Remake to use Proton Experimental.

  4. Start Hogwarts Legacy and play until controller rumble/vibration is triggered.

  5. Observe that rumble/vibration works correctly.

  6. Exit Hogwarts Legacy.

  7. Start Gothic 1 Remake using the same SteamOS system, controller, and Proton Experimental.

  8. Play in situations where controller rumble/vibration would normally be expected.

  9. Observe that no rumble/vibration feedback is felt.

  10. Repeat the test using:

    • The Nacon wireless USB dongle
    • A direct USB cable connection

The lack of vibration in Gothic 1 Remake remains present with both connection methods.
