Symptoms

The game continually leaks memory over time, until all RAM is maxed out and the entire system freezes. I'm not sure if it's ramping up smoothly or if it's suddenly spiking - periodically checking my system monitor on my other screen, it'll be occupying a tiny amount of memory at the start, and then later I'll notice it's sitting at around 4gb of memory use, and then when it starts to stutter and freeze I'll look over and all 32gb of memory is occupied.

Reproduction

I can't seem to find exact steps to reproduce it - sometimes it happens when I'm clicking on a bunch of stuff quickly, but it's also happened while I've been AFK for >20 minutes - but it seems to be happening much more often now that I am 40+ hours into a run and there's way more going on. I don't remember encountering the problem during the first 10-20 hours of gameplay.

There's a thread open on the game's steam discussions forum about this issue - it has a few windows users experiencing what seems to be an unrelated issue in it, but almost everyone else is a linux user on proton experiencing the same problem I am: Link

Same issue, seems worse in the latest update where hitting a crash in 30-60 minutes instead of 3 or so hours. Definitely random since monitored 400MB to 5.4GB with 30 minutes of active play, then got 600MB to 12GB with it being idle for 30 minutes, then ballooning to 18GB with 10 minutes of regular play after that.

In my case the game so far seems to settle down at around 1GB of ram usage, a bit over an hour on proton experimental and then proton 10 each and that's what I saw each time, at that point it didn't seem like things were growing. However, the first report mentions a save with a lot of playtime on it, so it'd be good to know if others had to have such high playtimes too to get the same issue.

It'd also be good to get a save code, hopefully those can be shared.

Here is the export of my latest save. Still no idea what is causing it since anytime I have a theory it stops behaving that way. Mine seems to be getting more stable the later into the run I go, so my latest theory is its something to do with spell casting. Memory looks to be holding steady now that I'm not trying to chain cantrips and working a more passive build.

Decided to record a video of the issue, since trying to track it feels like watching a pot boil. It was increasing slowly for the first hour going from 400MB to around 1GB, then started to increase rapidly at the 68 minute mark before being closed 30 minutes later at 20GB. Still no rhyme or reason to what causes it since seen this issue start sooner too.

I encountered this again after a week of wondering whether the new update had somehow fixed it, and had my resource monitor open on my second screen this time:

As you can see, roughly two and a half hours into this play session my memory use started increasing at a fast but steady/constant rate. I noticed the leak about 9-10 minutes after it had started, and stopped touching the game to leave it running completely idle for the next couple of minutes. The game's memory usage continued at the exact same pace, no changes.

I went back to the main menu after exporting my save file - upon doing this, the memory usage immediately stopped climbing (that's the plateau you see in the above image).

After a few minutes of idling in the main menu, I loaded back into that same save file and let the game continue to run for about 5 minutes, no change in memory usage. I then tried loading the save file I exported during the middle of the memory leak, and, again, no change in memory use.

I went back to my main save file and continued playing the game as I did before for another 10+ minutes, spam-developing resources by the hundreds, adjusting alchemy ratios and swapping research in and out aggressively to try and "provoke" another leak, but no dice. Afterward, I quit the game and all was as normal, all that memory was returned completely in an instant (the dip right at the end, in the above image).

I can't be exactly sure what I was doing the very moment the memory leak started, but this run has been very alchemy-centered and focused much more on passive resource generation. I only tend to cast spells when needed, namely in completing rituals, which I unlocked in this run earlier today.

I'll switch to Proton 9.0-4 as per Boshea241's suggestion and see if it happens again...

Yes, I also get this. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. There doesn't seem to be any trigger that I can determine.

On my system (Mint 22.3), it causes a complete lockup. You must hold the power button to get the system to shut off because the system becomes completely non-responsive. I tried MangoHud first (launch options set to MANGOHUD_CONFIG="fps_limit=60,no_display" mangohud %command%) but that did not do anything.

I ended up installing and enabling earlyoom , which kills the process when it goes rogue before the system locks up.

OK, I had another memory leak this morning. I had several play sessions last night where there were no problems at all.

The only other program open at this time was Firefox, which had one tab open to Google Messages.

OK, doing some digging -- and I'm not an expert so this is speculation -- the huge number of RtlGrowFunctionTable calls suggests to me that the game is calling Expression.Compile() to rebuild the incremental functions very frequently. That makes sense for an incremental game like this.

It's especially an issue when you unlock a new Scholar Concept. Today I unlocked Analyze Space, which reduces the cost of Spatial resources on Attributes. There's about 3-6 Spatial resources, and there's... it's got to be hundreds of Attributes. Any of the screens where it's just a big list of buttons to upgrade? Those are all attributes. Unlocking a new Concept starts at 0, and I'm far enough in the game that I took that new Concept from 0 to over 1100 in minutes. If every cost function on every Attribute that has a Spatial resource cost had to be recompiled at every advancement... to say nothing of the effects of Mastery advancement of the Concept... that's a lot of recompiles of dynamic functions.

The problem is that I think the RtlGrowFunctionTable is an NT API function call, so in Proton it's just... pushing to the unmanaged process heap, I suppose? That might be a problem with VirtualFree? Like you might try to point fingers back to Mono or Unity that this is their fault, but I think this won't be a problem on Windows because VirtualFree will actually clean up the function table. This is something at the edge between framework and emulator, but the fact that it doesn't happen on Windows (at least not in my experience) suggests it's something in Proton.

However, systems programming is very far outside my wheelhouse.
