With the current SteamVR stable 1533664367 https://steamcommunity.com/games/250820/announcements/detail/1707314220592748520 direct mode works.
Also with this SteamVR beta the display mirror window has the same dimensions as the Vive display (i.e. too big for 1920x1080 monitors) and can not be resized.
