Describe the bug
When playing No Man's Sky in VR it seems like every second frame is dropped. Even small head movements result in heavy double vision, with the second image jumping ahead (in rotation) really far. This makes the game completely unplayable in VR.

Expected behavior
Reprojection and pose prediction should keep in game contents in a fixed position, even if it performs badly. It should also under no circumstances overcompensate for head movement.

System Information (please complete the following information):

  • Distribution: Manjaro KDE
  • SteamVR version: 1.12.3
  • Steam client version: 1589568628
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Graphics driver version: Mesa 20.0.6 (LLVM 10.0.0), ACO globally enabled
  • Gist for SteamVR System Information:

Performance Data (optional, but very helpful):

Additional context
For that trace I turned down the super sampling / resolution to around 25% and I set the GPU to high performance mode. GPU utilisation was at around 30% and lower.

I'm experiencing the same issue, the perf graph is a big mess of purple with orange in between.

An interesting thing to note is, that on the desktop mirror it looks okay, but in the headset the two images for the left+right eye don't seem to match. Therefore the hefty double vision, which makes it absolutely unplayable.

Looks like they improved performance by quite a lot with the new NMS update (from the beta, will release tomorrow in stable). Still get a lot of flicker etc when the game doesn't completely keep up though.

Ssmirgol 2020-06-16 github

Well it has gotten better for me, it is now much much less worse, but still not a smooth experience.
I've lowered all settings to the lowest, but I still don't hit the 90fps mark. Actually the performance difference isn't all that big between a rather high setting and the lowest one.

There are still some occasional "jumps" (flicker) of frame images, to say it does not render the image from the correct position, which makes it not smooth. It immediately corrects itself after such a jump, but it's still very noticeable. It still is much much better than before, where this was happening all the time.

If you see 'jumps' often enough to bother you, try enabling Legacy Reprojection Mode in the per-app settings. It's not ideal, but it's functional until motion smoothing has some implementation.

I'm getting the exact same issue with the 5700xt as outlined here but on Windows!
Took a while to find other people with the same problem!

I've tried rolling back the AMD driver to multiple versions from december to now. No luck.
But is it a SteamVR issue over a No Mans Sky issue?

NMS in general is fairly poorly optimized. Some things to try:

  • Feral Interactive's 'game mode' thing works fairly well for me, without adjusting any settings. Just install it, make sure gamemoded is up and add gamemoderun %command% to your launch args for NMS (and really, any VR game)
  • https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/1555 also helps a little

I also have a 5700 XT and experiencing this crazy reprojection.
Why is it that every single other vr game works perfectly but when it comes to no man's sky (and to be honest the graphics aren't even that crazy), it lags and reprojects insanely. I use the vive.

Rraz789 2020-09-24 github

Unfortunately the latest update didn't fix it.
Hard to tell whose fault it is. SteamVR, NMS Devs or AMD.
I've submitted a bug report for the No Mans Sky devs. Who knows if it'll be looked at.

I'm using corectrl to set the power profile to VR and the cpu frequency governor of my 6700k to performance and the latest update makes it run almost perfect (on the lowest settings). I only get a small amount of stutter now when loading new bases but that's managable.

I also have a 5700 XT, 3700x, running Windows 10, vive pro, wireless connection for headset (have not tried wired yet to see if it makes a difference. NMS with latest update runs exactly how smirgol and blu3m00n1 describe. For me it is still unplayable in VR with the latest update when compared to other VR experiences.

smirgol, blu3m00n1, are you running wireless setups? Have you tried wired yet?

Hello @darqangels, friendly note that this issue tracker is for SteamVR running on Linux. Since you're running Windows, the information here is less relevant to you.

ZZamundaaa 2020-10-04 github

@darqangels sadly, wireless isn't supported on Linux. It could help you to use wired though if your CPU is overloaded with NMS + wireless.

This issue was just fixed on the Windows side in 1.15.8 SteamVR Beta.
Gave it a test myself and it's working perfectly for me.

Not sure how this translates to the Linux SteamVR but hopefully you guys will be able to play soon.

ZZamundaaa 2020-11-16 github

Well, right now it doesn't even seem to start at all for me in VR, so that's a non-starter. SteamVR on Linux is currently in such a bad shape though that it doesn't really matter, it would lag too much anyways :/

ZZamundaaa 2023-04-06 github

Performance is now relatively good with the latest SteamVR and NMS
