Describe the bug
A clear and concise description of what the bug is.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Have a working SteamVR setup on mint 19 (nvidia 1050Ti)
  2. Setup a new machine with ubuntu 20.04 budge (nvidia 2080Ti)
  3. Copy steam folders to new system
  4. Start steamvr
  5. Get no hmd detected

Expected behavior
SteamVR should detect the headset

System Information:

  • Distribution: Ubuntu
  • SteamVR version: 1.8.21 (linux_temp)
  • Steam client version: 10.09.2020 (d.m.y)
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Graphics driver version: nvidia 450.66
  • Gist for SteamVR System Information: https://gist.github.com/JoshuaBehrens/4490fe07e5c307f294285f1007497957 (contains two outputs from a fresh installation instead from the initial statement that I copied files over. so these steps seem not to be relevant)

Additional context
I already contacted steam support first. These are the steps I already took care of:

  • Install graphics driver for my graphics card
  • Try every USB 3 port
  • Try every DP port
  • Change order of DP ports for headset and display
  • Try with so few attached cables as possible (usb mouse, power, headset usb and headset dp)
  • Restart
  • Reconnect tether cable at break point and from headset
  • Use different build from steamvr
  • Start steamvr without addons
  • Start steamvr without steam cloud sync
  • Start steamvr without workshop items
  • Remove USB devices (Developer settings) that one is actually tricky because it does not want to start the tool to remove that data but in the logs is a line that says that isAdminUser is not implemented yet for non windows OS so that could be the reason
  • Add udev rule for the lsusb entry for the headset

Note: Commenters who are also experiencing this issue are encouraged to include the "System Information" section in their replies.

I recommend you to not use the linux_temp. It's very old
