Since update 2.12.3 i get the error: "Make sure your headset´s display is in fullscreen mode" (-202)

  • 2.12.2 worked great a day earlier, did not update mesa or kernel in betwen.
  • Stable works fine only beta branch has this issue since 2.12.3

tried deleting my steam.vrsettings file, so the defaults get loaded, but it does not help.

Driver: amdgpu
KDE on wayland

I have a custom build kernel which patches a amdgpu issue with mode setting of the headset, which lead to a gpu freeze before on the first start of SteamVR.. However this patch is not mainline yet.

See attached System Report for details.

I think I'm hit with the same issue on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS with KDE Plasma 5.27.12, X11, Linux 6.11.0-29, with an AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT GPU and an HTC Vive (2017).

Steam beta with SteamVR beta 2.12.2 and earlier are fine, SteamVR beta 2.12.3 broke everything.

Let me know if I should attach a system report or anything else as well. I'm falling back to stable for now.

Same here. I tried both RADV and AMDVLK drivers.

Same on Debian Testing
Kernel 6.16.0-rc4 and 6.15.4 (Debian config, mainline kernel)
Mesa 25.0.5-2 (Debian) - Using RADV
KDE 6.3.5 (X11)
Radeon 6700XT

Using a Valve Index

Rolling back to stable immediately fixes the issue.

Noting that 2.12.4 does not seem to have fixed this for me.

It has been a while since I used my HTC Vive Pro. So I noticed the exact same issue starting with 2.12.4. But I didn't test 2.12.3 and earlier.

Switch to stable fixed it. The only issue left is the grainy audio thing that is discussed in another issue.

Same issue. Stable sometimes throws the error, but a restart circumvents it. It persists "permanently" on 2.12.4 beta branch.

Specs:

  • Kernel: 6.15.6 RT_PREEMPT
  • OS: Debian 12 Bookworm
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X
  • Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 31 [Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX]
  • MESA version: 22.3.6

Using stable branch works also on 6.16-rc6 to workaround the fullscreen mode error

The only issue left is the grainy audio thing that is discussed in another issue.
