The last online counter only resets when the client exists.

When the client is not gracefully shutdown, or when the user logs out of Steam friends, it will show the last online status of when last exiting the client.

I don't see any problems. Where are you checking the last online status?

What I did: start Steam client, log in with account A. Wait five minutes. Go to www.steamcommunity.com, log in with account B, go to friends list, see A is online. Kill Steam client, wait one minute. Refresh web page, A's status says "online 1 minute ago."

Do the exact same but this time set your Friends status to offline.

OK, I can repro when doing that. It turns out that Steam is only tracking the last logoff time internally, there is no tracking of "I set my status to Offline" time. That's why you always see the last logoff time and we don't have the status change time around to alter the current behavior. Adding this would require several internal changes so it won't happen any time soon.

I do hope it gets fixed eventually, it has been there, very obviously, for years now. I know it is a minor issue, but it deems the last online status indicator to be unreliable. And it will continue to be for many years to come with the given mindset.

If you put a developer on it I am sure this individual can turn around the "I am gone now." message from the client into "Are you still there?" request from the server, in not such a long period.
