Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Describe what you expected should happen and what did happen. Please link any large code pastes as a Github Gist

When someone sends you a new chat message and you don't click on the notification in the corner immediately there is usually a new section at the top of the main friends window which notifies you of this unread message with a yellow counter. Steam will also generate a green notification at the top of the main window with the text "1 unread chat message" if you clicked on it it would open the friends window with the alert at the top. Currently on the beta channel this section is missing. It only displays the green friends in-game, blue online friends and grey offline friends but there is no yellow counter with unread messages at the top.

This functionality does work as expected on the stable channel.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Have someone send you a message
  2. Wait until the notification in the corner goes away
  3. Open the friends window

Observed result: no alert with the unread messages counter at the top
Expected result: alert is present

Something i've noticed, it seems the alert is present if you get a message while you were offline and you open the Steam window for the very first time
