Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

With proton 8.0-5 or any other version that I've tested, it doesn't seem to matter, also happens to some on windows, the game doesn't detect any button presses of the xbox series controller.

If disabling steam input it detects all button presses and the game is almost fixed was it not for this game breaking bug that magic is triggered in combination with physical attacks in one button press.

If I disable instead the steam overlay only (in the steam client stable version, this doesn't happen in the steam client beta), the game detects button presses of the xbox series controller but the layout of the buttons is all changed making the game unplayable.

The only way that I've found to fix this that actually works is to switch the game's file steam_api64.dll with one people are sharing online, while this fixes the controller it introduces other problem, steam achievements no longer unlock and that is also unacceptable.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Use a xbox series controller with the latest firmware and try to play the game.

Few years later I found a fix for anyone still looking, I imported these registry values (as a .reg file) into the proton prefix containing Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion and it fixed my controller issues!
