Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Multi platform games like Half-Life or WRATH seem to always install the Windows build. Enabling "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and picking any Proton version, THEN unchecking it will update the game and install the Linux build, but at some point in the future the game will go back to the Windows build. This has happened to me few times already, this is my 3rd or 4th time Half Life doesn't start with some wine / hl.exe related error when I expect the native Linux build to launch.

I have a similar problem with WRATH: Aoen of ruin. It seems like this game ships the same files for both Windows and Linux (both executables are present at the same time) so it's probably just a matter of launch options. Still, launching the game from Steam gives me an error "can't initialize Steamworks" while just running the executable directly from the game directory works fine (seems like it's completely DRM free). Doing the same trick as above - Switching on proton on/off fixes it, at least for few hours/days.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Install some multi platform game (for example Half-Life)
  2. Fail to launch the game with a wine debugger hl.exe error
  3. Toggle on/off proton compatibility tool to re-download the game in Linux version
  4. Enjoy the game till the next day it decides to randomly switch.
