I'm seeing this behavior in 2026, but only with select games. I've noticed with Red Dead Redepmtion 1.

tar -zcvf ~/Desktop/steam-logs.tar.gz ~/.steam/steam/logs]Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
Ever since an update about a month ago (March 2024) I get flooded by backlog all chat messages that I have received since the last time I have played a game, three at a time. Since only three messages are displayed at a time, the backlog notifications can last quite a long time with no way to stop them from displaying. These are old already read messages from many days ago. This issue was present on the regular beta client, and I have also confirmed it is an issue in the families beta client as well, as I only recently switched over to the families beta.
For reference see another user report I found on the Community forums:

Steps for reproducing this issue:
This also happens with notifications of other Steam users playing games as well as chat messages. I am attaching screenshots that show some of the flood of notifications
