I recently installed the AMD 13.1 drivers so that I could hopefully finally get TF2 to run. What happened was, I was able to get to the menu, poke around the options, and change the textures to "Very High" and turn on antialiasing. Then when I tried to close the options menu, it started flashing like a strobe light and nothing seemed to be clickable except Quit. When I tried to start it again, I got a black screen with a window that said:

Failed to create OpenGL device!
Error 0xFFFFFFFF.

Please see the following for more info.

Well, that link is obviously useless in my situation (also, you seriously need to employ some URL aliasing so I don't have to write all that crap down), but maybe it'll help figure out what's going wrong.

Other useful information:
ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 1GB VRAM
Kubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit edition

If there's something I could do to get more information like a crash log or something, let me know. I see people posting long textdumps that look like they came from trying to run the game from the console I think? No idea how to even do that.

Hi, for the logs and system information, see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/blob/master/README.md section Reporting Issues.

Not really what I was looking for, but maybe this will help. I'm going to assume the "Recent Failure Report" listed was for when TF2 crashed and that the file it lists (which isn't plaintext) was already sent to Valve:

Recent Failure Reports:
Thu Jan 31 18:08:26 2013 GMT: file ''/tmp/dumps/assert_20130131130747_1.dmp'', upload yes: ''CrashID=bp-8800154d-b0d9-49a6-ac7d-d452b2130131''

Also it says my video driver is "3.3.11672 Compatibility Profile Context". Everything else looks irrelevant to this topic.

I was able to make the game work again by manually deleting my graphics config file (SteamApps/stevethepocket/Team Fortress 2/tf/videoconfig_linux.cfg), and I suspect AA was at fault. If I can work up the nerve to try AMD's beta 13.2 driver (it said it specifically improves performance for TF2), I'll see if that makes AA work.

Catalyst beta 13.2 is not a legacy driver, feel free to try, but it is not compatible with the Radeon HD 4xxx series.
