Same situation on my Opensuse 12.2 / KDE 4.8.5 system.
Same situation on my Kubuntu 12.10 64bit KDE 4.9.4, I'm happy for the system tray icon for KDE, other issue, Steam don't close to tray.
The next client will have a change that may or may not help with the name (we weren't setting a title and I believe that's what KDE is looking at). I don't know why the icon wouldn't show properly as we are setting that. Does the icon show OK on the tray itself?
Looking at #1098 I guess the tray doesn't show the icon properly, so there's either a KDE bug or a libappindicator problem. It's probably best to report this to KDE so that they can see what data KDE is getting.

I'd like to mention that I am running Fluxbox (1.3.2-gentoo). I am getting the same 'missing' icon in Steam. and the menu is horribly slow (about 1-2 seconds before it appears, and the highlight does not follow the mouse).
Though the menu just appeared today after the update, I didn't have it before.

Also happens on KDE 4.9.5 and openSUSE 12.2.
Its cause the Ubuntism libindicator was not installed, with is not easy to get on non Ubuntu systems.
I tried to install https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=libindicator&project=GNOME%3AAyatana and there still is no tray icon symbol. Only the ? placeholder.
@gdrewb-valve the missing title is fixed.
I used Steam with Openbox and tint2 panel and it worked perfectly. On KDE I get no icon and menu appearance is delayed. So it seems only some DEs are affected.
Why is this closed? It's still not fixed.
There's a work around here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/1190#issuecomment-13052079 for those who are still experiencing it due to an out-of-date client.
Like the title, system tray icon has no image and it doesn't have a name.
As for functionality is working properly.
