Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1726604483
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: steam-logs.zip
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 / Driver Version: 560.35.03 / CUDA Version: 12.6

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I am trying to play Baldur's Gate 3 on my MacBook Air (macOS Catalina, 10.15.7), streaming from my Linux desktop (Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS). When I press the Stream button on my MacBook Air, the game launches on my Linux desktop. The Stream button on my MacBook Air changes to Stop while I presume it's trying to connect, but ultimately it fails after a few second and reverts back to Stream.

I would have expected the MacBook Air to connect to the stream running on my Linux desktop such that I could play the game on my MacBook Air. I specifically call out Baldur's Gate 3 here, but the same issue occurs with other games. I did not have problems with this setup before today. The last time I tried to stream, probably around the beginning of September, everything worked as expected. Toggling hardware encoding in the advanced host options does not make a difference. It worked previously with hardware encoding enabled.

The logs (steam-logs.zip) do not seem to indicate any streaming related errors. The host indicates that the streaming session starts on the relevant port, but that seems to be it. The client does not seem to produce any useful logging other than it flushed the store in configstore_log.txt. Please find runtime diagnostics for the host at Runtime diagnostics.

I should finally note that the inverse does work. If I stream a game from my MacBook Air, my Linux desktop will connect and properly stream the game.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Launch the Steam client on the host
  2. Launch the Steam client on the client
  3. Start streaming a game from the client
  4. Observe how the client fails to connect

I loathe Apple/MAC so I am limited in my knowledge of their specifics problems, but Linux to Windows (remote play from W to L) has a similar problem due to remote desktop being disconnected the incorrect way. On the windows side, I can't disconnect the session I have to run a script (as an admin) that keeps the screen active (without locking) and then steam stream works properly. It may be this.

Thanks for the suggestion @SZUPEK but it doesn't work either when both machines are freshly booted with screens active. It used to work in this setup as well. I've been browsing historical issues a bit and I'm wondering if it's related to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10984. @kisak-valve, is there some kind of codec negotiation that happens in the background and that might fail? I suspect the issue may have been introduced by an upgraded driver on the host whereas the client is so old it doesn't receive any updates anymore (2013 MacBook Air).
